No expenses spared! Mel Gibson pictured directing new World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge in Sydney... as the crew get to work on expansive battle field set featuring dug out pits and fire explosions

Mel Gibson appears to be sparing no expense for his latest directorial offering Hacksaw Ridge, which is currently being filmed in Australia.
Shots taken of a scene from World War II drama on Thursday, shot in a farm in Bringelly in Sydney’s South West, show a landscape which has been transformed into a true battle field, complete with explosions and hundreds of soldiers.

A huge dusty barren pit replicating a war torn battlefield in the midst of conflict has been dug out in the middle of the farm, where the action appeared to centre on a makeshift army assault course.
The dusty landscape showed dug out trenches replicating the attrition warfare of the scene, with burnt out trees and logs scattered around.
Adding to the set's impressive authenticity, a smoke machine was used to create a huge fire explosion with billowing clouds of smoke, with some extras even being taken down in the pursuing explosion.

With conditions dry and sunny on the exterior set, the extras dressed as khaki-clad soldiers who clustered together on the army bivouac, reflective of the forthcoming films 1940’s setting.
Baring their rifles, a number of shots showed the extras in action as they fired attack on their imaginary enemy line.
After the conflict a number of soldiers were seen playing dead in an army trench as their bodies were strewn across the dusty ground.

Hacksaw Ridge will be Gibson’s fifth directorial offering after the mixed critical and commercial successes of The Man Without A Face, Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto.
The New York born actor and director returned to New South Wales - where he spent much of his early life - in July as he prepared to shoot his latest creative venture.
Gibson, 59 – who was cleared of an alleged verbal attack against a photographer last month - has been in adopted home Sydney since July to shoot the film.
'I'm so glad to be here again, working here again, bumping into people I've known for years, decades, again... and moving forward - it's been great,' he said during a press conference at Sydney's Fox Studios at the time.
'It gives me a particular giggle,' he said. 'I kicked off over 35 years ago here (and) I feel like I've picked up the thread where I left off since last I worked here.'

Starring The Amazing Spider-Man's Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge is based on the true story of conscientious objector Desmond Doss, who saved 75 men in Okinawa in World War II without ever firing a gun.
'It's about a man who wouldn't touch a weapon and wanted to be part of saving lives in the worst place on earth. I mean Okinawa was a horrific place... there were over 300,000 casualties, mostly civilian,' he said.
As well as being directed by Mel, the American war drama film cast includes high profile stars Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey and Teresa Palmer.
Hacksaw Ridge is expected to be completed towards the end of 2016.
