GMA does Star Wars, Taylor Swift's squad and Donald Trump while Today show brings Peanuts to life in morning show battle over Halloween (and Matt Lauer gets back in drag)

  • The casts of Good Morning America and the Today Show put on a spectacle on Friday, showing off their best Halloween costumes
  • While GMA went for a variety of costumes inspired by pop culture in 2015, the Today show cast members each went as a character from the Peanuts comic

Good Morning America had their audience in stitches with their outrageous display of pop-culture Halloween costumes, while the Today show took on the classic characters from the Peanuts comic strip in the morning shows' annual costume display.

'This is our Super Bowl, our Christmas, our Thanksgiving...we live for this all year long!' Savannah Guthrie said on Friday morning.

The festivities kicked off just after 8am, with the GMA cast showing off their over-the-top outfits just before the big reveal at rival Today. It should be noted that CBS This Morning does not dress up for Halloween.

Robin Roberts started proceedings, dressing as Cookie Lyon from hip-hop TV show Empire, and was joined by T.J. Holmes as Lucious Lyon.

It's gonna be huge: Lara Spencer did her best Trump impression when she dressed up as the Republican front-runner Friday morning

'It's fantastic to be here,' Spencer said in a mock Trump voice. 'The ratings will be huge. Is this a TV opportunity? I plan to build a wall between me and the competition, I flew in on my beautiful private jet.'

The pair were followed by George Stephanopoulos who appeared as Ed Sheeran. Lara Spencer led the thousands who will undoubtedly dress as Donald Trump this year, opting for a blond wig only slightly more disheveled than The Donald's own tresses.

She also attempted to take off the presidential candidate's signature speaking style.

'It's fantastic to be here,' she said gruffly. 'The ratings will be huge. Is this a TV opportunity? I plan to build a wall between me and the competition, I flew in on my beautiful private jet.'

She also bizarrely reprised last year's hugely popular Royal Baby costume becoming baby Trump for a trip through GMA's studios.

Next up Ginger Zee burst through as the Hulk while saving the best for last, Amy Robach appeared as Taylor Swift. Mocking the star's squad, she had a line-up of scantily clad cardboard women attached to her sides. Zee, who is pregnant, said her costume was suited to her current physique.

'There's no way to make a pregnant woman feel bigger than making her the hulk', she joked

The cast then appeared in a trailer for Star Wars with Lara Spencer as Chewbacca and Ginger Zee and T.J. Holmes appearing as Rey and Finn. The presenters also went to a haunted house. Robin Roberts said: ‘Everyone, the cast and crew, had a good time.’

Meanwhile, the Today Show brought the Peanuts comic strip to life, dressing up as each and everyone one of the cartoon's child characters.

The cast revealed their costumes in a skit, based off scenes from the upcoming Peanuts movie, due out in November.

The skit started with Willie Geist banging away on a miniature piano as the yellow-haired Schroeder, before scurrying off to class.

The next scene showed Tamron Hall as Peppermint Patty chatting with Natalie Morales' Marcie at their desks before their teacher incoherently reprimands them to pay attention.

At a school dance in the following scene Savannah Guthrie plays Sally, trying to get the apple of her eye, Carson Daly's Linus, to dance with her but as always he doesn't seem very eager.

Then, Snoopy and Woodstock come jetting in on Snoopy's dog house - played by Hota Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford in early for the Halloween spectacle.

The skit ends with Al Roker trying to kick a football as Charlie Brown, but ends up running into Lucy instead - played by a cross-dressing Matt Lauer.

'This is going to be the best Halloween ever,' Lauer says as the entire cast gets together and starts dancing as the famous cartoon characters.

The cast then showed a clip about the weeks-long process it took them to get ready for the big reveal, enlisting the help of the make-up artists and costumers at Saturday Night Live.

While Savannah's costume required relatively little make-up, artisans worked hours to make the signature thin hair of Daly's Linus.

And some of the Today show cast weren't as happy about their casting.

'This is really unfortunate,' Kathie Lee said of her Woodstock costume. 'He doesn't talk so why did they choose me?'

Meredith Vieira, on the other hand, thought it was funny that she was chosen to be the dirty Pig-Pen. When asked if she identifies with her character, Vieira said: 'Well apparently the people of Today identify with me as this character.'

Matt Lauer boasted that he had the body to pull off the feminine Lucy: 'I've got the legs to carry this off.'

The Today show cast spent the rest of the morning showing viewers how to make last-minute costumes and snacks for Halloween parties, while the GMA cast threw a Monster Mash-worthy bash.

In a lip-syncing competition, Robach performed Taylor Swift’s iconic Bad Blood. The star mocked the singer’s rivalry with Katy Perry as GMA anchor Paula Faris took to the stage with her iconic shark back-up dancers – weatherman Rob Marciano and correspondent Ron Claiborne. She jokingly refused to watch ‘Taylor’s’ performance referencing the stars’ alleged rivalry.

Stars Rumer Willis and Maks also got into the spirit appearing on the show in costume. Bruce and Demi’s daughter was dressed as a spooky maid while Maks was a red devil. They were joined by GMA’s weekend anchor Dan Harris who turned up as Harry Potter.

However, it was Lara Spencer who stole the show and won the lip synch challenge with her Trump performance. Performing the Nae Nae, the anchor refused to break character from The Donald. She was easily voted the winner of the challenge. Faris told her: ‘There’s no bad blood between us, like me and some other contestants. I’ve got nothing but fireworks for you.’
