M&S website temporarily shut down after customers claim to be able to see other users payment details

  • Website went offline for two hours
  • Customers details were visible to others in this 'technical' glitch
  • The firm claims it was an internal issue and they had not been hacked
  • Website is back up and running

Marks & Spencer suspended its website for two hours last night after customers reported they could see other users' account details.

The high street retailer claimed that the fault was caused by an 'internal technical problem' and that no one's personal details were compromised.

Angry customers complained they could see other people's orders and for a 'brief moment' some could see the last four digits of other customers' payment cards.

Web users have been on high alert over online security since the hacking scandal that afflicted TalkTalk customers last week.

A spokeswoman for Marks & Spencer said: 'There were no financial details compromised at all.

'We weren't hacked by a third party. It was an internal technical problem.'

The problem caused the firm to temporarily suspend its website on Tuesday night while it investigated further, and apologised to customers for any inconvenience caused.

Responding to claims that card details were visible on the site, the spokeswoman added that customers may have been able to see the last four digits of other payment cards 'for a brief moment', but said as details were encrypted, there was no security risk.

Affected customers turned to Facebook for reassurance and to draw attention to the issue.

Wendie Mitchell claimed she had been able to see two people's accounts when she tried to buy a pair of jeans online as a birthday present for her husband.

Mandy Green was another customer calling for the company to provide reassurance that accounts had not been compromised.

She wrote: 'What reassurances are you offering to customers as I now feel that my details could be misused by anyone?'

A spokeswoman for the company said that the issue had now been completely resolved and no other customers had been affected.

'Since 10pm last night, the website has been up and running as normal.'
