She's known for her always perfectly coiffed blonde locks.

But stylish Diane Kruger has revealed that a recent experiment with red hair was not planned - after she attempted to freshen up her look at home.

The actress revealed to Allure that her attempt at a quick update of her blonde locks resulted in a disastrous change in colour.

'I hadn't colored my hair in six months, and I had been away working for two months,' the 39-year-old told Allure.

'I'm in New York, and it looked a little dull, so I just thought, I'll go to [pharmacy chain] CVS and buy a gloss. Only it turned my hair a dark mud brown.'

Luckily Diane has connections - and summoned a professional to help correct her colour.

The AmfAR red carpet in Los Angeles, California was star studded. From actress Sharon Stone to model, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, we saw it all.

Although the color black seemed to be the theme of the event, Diane Kruger stuck to her guns and donned a gorgeous pale pink slip dress with black and white embellishments.

She kept it simple by just donning a black box clutch and chandelier earrings.

'I called anybody that I know in New York who could help me,' she explained of her error.

'Serge Normant literally saved me this morning. And now it's still slightly red, but it's getting better.

'I have to keep going back. The woman at the salon who is helping me said it's going to take three visits.'

Luckily even with badly dyed hair, Diane Kruger looks fantastic.

The actress debuted her red locks two weeks ago, but has since returned to her normal blonde colour.

Indeed at this week's amFAR gala, which she attended with long-term love Joshua Jackson, she looked back to normal.
