Going back in time! Ben Affleck is a vintage villain in 1920s garb on set of his new movie Live By Night

His own life has been stressful of late, with a divorce and rumours of infidelity.

So no doubt Ben Affleck was grateful to be stepping back in time on Monday.

The 43-year-old actor was spotted taking a ride in a pale yellow vintage convertible on set of his new film Live By Night, in Georgia.

The stylish 1929 Franklin Airman Roadster, worth around $75,000, had been adapted to carry a camera on the hood.

A sound recordist appeared to be hiding inside the car, behind the actor as he sat in the passenger seat, in the street which was dressed to look like the 1920s.

The estranged husband of Jennifer Garner showed off his bulky frame in a period ensemble of waistcoat, shirt, braces, tie trousers and brown leather shoes.

The story is set in Ben's hometown of Boston during the Roaring Twenties, when the drink is flowing and bullets are flying in the age of Al Capone.

The book on which it is based follows Joe Coughlin, youngest son of a Boston police captain, after he turns his back on his upbringing to get into the world of crime.

After working his way up from petty crime, the story begins in earnest with him in the pay of the city's most notorious mobsters.

Ben is both directing and starring in Live By Night, which also features Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning and Chris Cooper.

He helped write the screenplay, which is based on the acclaimed crime novel by Dennis Lehane. It is slated for release in 2017. 

Live By Night marks Ben's first directorial effort since 2012's Argo, which won Best Picture at the Oscars in 2013.

The A-lister was snubbed in the Best Director category, making it only the fourth time in the history of the Academy Awards that a film has won Best Picture without a Best Director nod.

Afleck stars in the eagerly awaited Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, and will additionally play the superhero in Suicide Squad and two Justice League movies.

He and wife Jennifer Garner announced their split on June 30, a day after their 10th wedding anniversary. They are parents to Violet, nine, six- year-old Seraphina and Samuel, three.
