Fury over 'tasteless' homeless-themed, star-studded Bronx party - complete with bullet-ridden cars - organized to gain support for $58million waterfront condos

  • Gigi Hadid and Kendell Jenner were at the party in a derelict piano factory
  • So were Carmelo Anthony, Naomi Campbell and Adrian Brody
  • Rave was called 'Macabre Suite' and was hosted by artist Lucien Smith
  • Was backed by real estate firms Somerset Partners and The Chetrit Group
  • Decorations included bullet-hole ridden cars and trash-can fires

Real estate developers have been slammed for hosting a homeless-themed rave in the Bronx.

Gigi Hadid, NBA star Carmelo Anthony, Kendall Jenner, Naomi Campbell and Adrien Brody were among the celebs who attended the lavish 'Macabre Suite' event at a derelict piano factory, hosted by artist Lucien Smith.

The shindig on Thursday night was aimed at building support for two luxury tower blocks on the South Bronx waterfront being developed by Somerset Partners and The Chetrit Group.

But it has generated anger from residents and community leaders, who have accused the organizers of lacking awareness and empathy.

Controversial decorations at the venue called Boogie Down included two burnt-out cars riddled with bullet holes, while trash can fires were set outside.

Film director Baz Luhrmann was one of the many revelers who posed for pictures alongside them.

Guests were also treated to gourmet pizza as they danced away the night with the help of DJs.

The venue is just down the road from Mitchel Houses, one the largest housing projects in New York City.

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito tweeted on Saturday: 'Lack of empathy & basic awareness are signs of an ailing society. Who thought "Bronx is Burning" theme a good idea?'

'Trivializing legit community concerns not welcome. Neither are attempts to erase neighborhood's culture & history,' she added.

A blogger for the website Welcome2TheBronx wrote: 'Income inequality couldn’t have had a better show than what transpired this past Thursday, October 29th, with many of New York City’s elite and society names descending on the South Bronx neighborhood of Port Morris to celebrate death in an event dubbed by developers The Chetrit Group and Somerset Partners as "Macabre Suite" in an attempt to rebrand the neighborhood as the Piano District and bring attention up north to their latest and first project in The Bronx.'

'How could these individuals cosign such an event where there was no concern for the real world issues which the community faces outside the gates of the party on a daily basis?

'The struggles? The parents trying to provide food on the table for their families as they are working non-living wage jobs and are overburdened with rent?'

They reported that Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr was at the event. Daily Mail Online have contacted him for comment.

According to the New York Daily News, another attendee wrote: 'In South Bronx under Third Ave Bridge at an art party in a derelict piano factory eating Roberta's gourmet pizza. The homeless not amused.'

Somerset and Chetrit reportedly bought two plots overlooking the Harlem River worth around $58million.

There are plans to build two towers with 1,200 units between them, The Daily News reported.

A billboard has recently gone up in the area, advertising the new development.

It reads: 'Luxury waterfront living. World-class dining, fashion, art and architecture. Coming soon.'
