Mesut Ozil handball was deliberate for Arsenal, referee was correct to rule out goal

  • Mesut Ozil thought he had levelled for Arsenal against Bayern Munich
  • However, the midfielder knocked the ball into the net with his arm
  • Referee Gianluca Rocchi booked the Gunners star after incident

Mesut Ozil may have been disappointed not to have equalised for Arsenal but referee Gianluca Rocchi was 100 per cent correct.

It’s what I like to call a good old fashioned handball – Ozil has deliberately knocked that past Manuel Neuer into the net.

We often talk about players getting there early and it hits them in an ‘unnatural position’. That just is not the case here - very deliberate and Arsenal can’t feel hard done to.

The Diego Costa incident just before half-time in Chelsea’s game was the right call by referee Pavel Kralovec - he got it spot on in not awarding a penalty.

There was a coming together as Costa bore down on goal but he was delayed in going down and wanted to see how far he could go. The striker decides he can’t so goes down, but the coming together prior to that exonerates the dive.

Costa’s no Ashley Young, put it that way.
