Greece's Euro 2004 winning football stars will join the national Olympic team and a host of other celebrities to carry the Olympic torch across the newly completed Rio-Antirio bridge.

The suspension bridge, which is the longest of its kind in the world, was finally completed in June after seven years.

It crosses the 3km-long Corinth strait and is the culmination of a massive project which ran parallel with the time period of Greece's Olympic preparations.

And to celebrate both the opening of the bridge and the homecoming of the Olympics to its birthplace in Greece, the Olympic torch will be carried across the bridge on Sunday evening at 6pm Greek time with a party atmosphere expected.

Today, the torch continues it's travels around the islands of the Ionian Sea stopping off on Kefalonia, scene of the film captain Corelli's Mandolin, where it will spend the night.

Greece's Euro 2004-winning coach Otto Rehhagel will be a torch bearer when the Olympic flame is carried across the Rio-Antirio bridge near Patras on Sunday.

The German will hand the torch over to Greek national Olympic football coach Efstratios Apostolakis.
