Alive with can-can routines (bottom right), drinking and scandal, the Paris establishment became notorious. Its exotic reputation was fuelled further by the addition of a giant wooden elephant in 1900 that featured a room in its belly for intimate dances (centre). Many of the cabaret performers quickly became prominent characters in the nightclub, including Mistinguett (left), who was said to have insured her legs for 500,000 francs. The Busójárás festival in Hungary is an event held to scare off winter and pay homage to the Battle of Mohács. Project Monsoon was created to bring colour to Seoul's rainy season. Whales, turtles and fish can be viewed underfoot in the capital city, created with special hydrochromatic paint that is only revealed when it gets wet. The venture was created with the help of colour company Pantone, to help residents look forward to the monsoon season.

If the tale of the search for the lost underground city of Akakor and its Ugha Mongulala tribe sounds like the script for an Indiana Jones movie - it's because it was used as the basis for the last film, The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. Said to have been located in the heart of the Amazon, the civilisation was first mentioned in 1972 by a man called Tatunca Nara (top right with bow and arrows), who claimed to be from the ancient society. He was keen to show people the city and is thought to have led several expeditions to it in the 1970s. Three people on these trips died, though Nara claimed he wasn't with them when they perished. The fantastical details were documented in Brugger's book The Chronicles Of Akakor, which was published in 1972 (bottom right).
