The Dissolve, Pitchfork's New Film Site, Set to Launch This Wednesday
By Pitchfork on July 8, 2013 at 3:42 p.m. EDT
We're happy to announce that Pitchfork Media's new film site, The Dissolve, will debut this Wednesday, July 10.
Led by Editorial Director Keith Phipps, The Dissolve will be a playground for film lovers, featuring insightful reviews, commentary, interviews, and news about the films of the moment, while also exploring more than a century of film history. The site will also conduct in-depth conversations with filmmakers, screenwriters, and actors while offering commentary that goes beyond gossip and box-office results.
In the first two weeks of publication, The Dissolve will unveil a number of ongoing features focusing on films both new and old, including The Conversation, a weekly discussion between The Dissolve’s writers about current films. On Monday, July 15, the site will premiere the first installment of its multi-part Movie of the Week feature, in which The Dissolve’s staff focuses on a film of their choosing for several days.
Other regular features will include Departures, in which Editor Scott Tobias looks at unexpected entries in the filmographies of notable figures, as well as Interdisciplinary, in which staff writer Noel Murray explores the extracurricular activities of filmmakers and those who have made filmmaking their second career. In Performance Review, contributor Mike D’Angelo goes back in time to rediscover great performances that went unrecognized by major awards in their day, while in The Laser Age, Phipps plunges into the wave of science-fiction films that began in the late 1960s. And Forgotbusters finds staff writer Nathan Rabin exploring the world of blockbusters that ended up making little or no impression, from The Golden Child to the 1998 Godzilla remake.
The Dissolve brings together a dream team of film writers who share a common vision. Editorial Director Keith Phipps is a former editor of The A.V. Club and a contributor to NPR.org, Slate, and other publications. Editor Scott Tobias is the former film editor of The A.V. Club and a contributor to NPR.org. The rest of the staff includes Senior Editors Tasha Robinson (The A.V. Club, Chicago Tribune, NPR.org) and Genevieve Koski (The A.V. Club); staff writers Nathan Rabin (The A.V. Club, and author of The Big Rewind, My Year of Flops, and You Don’t Know Me But You Don’t Like Me) and Noel Murray (The A.V. Club, Los Angeles Times); and News Editor Matt Singer (Indiewire, Filmspotting: SVU).
For the past few weeks, The Dissolve's staff has been gearing up for the site's launch by posting thoughts on films new and old on The Dissolve's Tumblr. Also follow The Dissolve on Twitter (@thedissolve) and Facebook.
