England's Dan Wheldon shot past his team-mate Tony Kanaan with nine laps to go to snatch victory in the IRL Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg in Florida.

Kanaan crashed into leader Ryan Briscoe and Wheldon took advantage to win for Andretti Green Racing, who had the first four cars home in the series' first street race.

"It's always going to be difficult to pass Tony; it was a difficult track to overtake but I honestly had an inkling of what was about to happen," Wheldon said, who averaged 83.140 miles per hour and won £57,500.

"I'm pretty sure I know what (team owner) Chip Ganassi was saying on the radio to Briscoe, it wasn't going to be let them by real easy.

"I knew something could happen and I had to be close enough to take up that opportunity if it arose, which it did."

Wheldon finished 1.457 seconds ahead of Kanaan for his second win of the season, with Scotland's Dario Franchitti in third.
