Sergio Aguero keeps his word and signs No 16 shirts for Manchester City fans after switching to 10 at the start of season

  • Sergio Aguero was No 16 for Manchester City but switched in August
  • After Edin Dzeko moved to Roma, Aguero decided to become No 10
  • He offered to sign fans' shirts that were bought with No 16 on the back
  • Aguero followed through on promise and signed replica tops on Tuesday

Sergio Aguero may be stuck on the sidelines nursing an injury but it doesn't seem to have affected his mood as the Argentine beamed for the cameras while he signed Manchester City shirts for fans.

The 27-year-old, who has not featured for the Premier League leaders since sticking five past Newcastle at the start of October, was putting his signature on No 16 replica tops bought by supporters before Aguero changed his number at the start of the season.

The former Atletico Madrid forward was due to wear No 16 again this season before the club loaned striker Edin Dzeko to Roma in August and Aguero opted to take No 10, previously worn by the Bosnian.

In an incredible gesture Aguero said he would personally sign any shirts purchased before the swap with No 10 on the back, and true to their word their star striker followed through with the promise on Tuesday.

At the time Aguero told the club's website: 'The No. 10 shirt means a lot to me. When I arrived at City, Edin had it - he wore it very well, and of course, I respected it.

'That's why I picked the No 16. I must admit, I have warmed to it over the past few years and shared many special moments in it but the no.10 shirt is very special for me.

'I always felt a connection to it, and even more so now.'

Earlier this week Aguero reported good progress as he works his way towards a return to action against Liverpool a week on Saturday.

Aguero has not played for City since the 6-1 demolition of Newcastle on October 3, sustaining a hamstring injury soon after while on international duty with Argentina.

And having posted on Twitter pictures on Monday of himself training alone outdoors and indoors accompanied by the message 'giving it my all on recovery work', Aguero said on Tuesday: 'I don't think I'm too far away now.

'Physically, I feel good and I've kept as fit as I can during my lay-off.'

The Liverpool game at the Etihad Stadium is City's next fixture.

And Aguero said: 'I still need to work hard for another week and if not this week, then maybe next, I hope to start training with the rest of the lads and so my target is Liverpool.
