Plaits a good look! Leona Lewis swaps her trademark wavy locks for edgy superlong braids as she enjoys a shopping spree at racy retailer Nasty Gal

She burst on to the scene with her hair in cute ringlets back when she entered The X Factor in 2006.

But Leona Lewis has ditched her trademark look in favour of a new edgy style.

The Bleeding Love beauty, 30, showed off her new superlong braids as she headed out on a shopping spree in Los Angeles this week.

Leona's honey blonde locks were set in French plaits, going all the way from her crown to her stomach.

She matched her daring image change with an racier outfit than usual, opting for a leather choker and a khaki green military style baseball jacket, favoured by the likes of Kylie Jenner.

It seemed that she had been out buying new items to match her more risque appearance as well.

The star carried a huge bag from US retailer Nasty Gal, which specialises in skimpy, sheer outfits and killer heels.

Her appearance comes as former mentor Simon Cowell is dealing with the aftermath of a disastrous show over the weekend.

Not only did the series - once the jewel in ITV's crown - pull in less viewers than Countryfile on Sunday, viewers accused the programme of being fixed after presenter Olly Murs announced contestant Monica Michaels would be going home despite it going to deadlock.

Monica herself was also in hot water after making a gun reference with her fingers and shouting 'bang bang bang' in the wake of the Paris terrorist attack.

However, there is no ill feeling towards Cowell from Leona's side despite going their separate ways musically in 2014, with the star recently insisiting she was still a fan of the show which made her famous.

Leona said: I don't think there's any formula to win it anymore and it is great to see that people aren't boxed in and can themselves as who they are.

'I think my would be that those taking part just need to be true to themselves.

'When I look back on everything that I've done it is such an amazing feeling. It has been such a journey and I have made some mistakes along the way but I can't complain.

'It has been nine years since the X Factor and I'm still loving making music.'
