Many men spend a lot of money and time planning the perfect proposals, but one man who traveled more than 3,000 miles to pop the question to his girlfriend proved that, sometimes, the effort and thought can be more precious than anything else.

Liam, who is from Scotland, traveled from his native country all the way to Boston, Massachusetts, to propose to his long-distance girlfriend of two years, Melissa, while capturing the entire journey – and the proposal – on camera.

At the start of the heartwarming YouTube clip, he holds up a diamond engagement ring and tells the camera: 'So I'm planning a surprise for my girlfriend, but it's not just as simple as booking a nice trip for us and springing it on her.'

'My problem is, she lives here, and I live here,' Liam shares, pointing to Scotland and the United States on a map.

'We've been traveling back and forth to visit each other, and we knew at some point, we would get married,' he says. 'This makes it difficult for me to surprise her, because any time that I'm visiting, she might suspect something.'

So, Liam decided to book a secret trip to Boston and show up at her doorstep with the ring.

'Hopefully she opens the door,' he tells the camera while setting off on his trip, which consisted of a six-hour international flight, plus a two-hour drive from the airport to Melissa's apartment in the suburb of Westfield.

Surprise! Melissa, clad in sweatpants and a fleece hoodie, is completely shocked when she opens her door and sees Liam standing their with an engagement ring

She said yes: Melissa breaks down in tears and accepts his proposal on her doorstep

Liam shows up at her place at night, quickly brushing his teeth in his rental car before knocking on her door, armed with the ring and a GoPro camera.

'Oh my god,' Melissa, clad in sweatpants and a fleece hoodie, gasps as she opens the door and sees Liam holding the ring.

She immediately breaks down in tears, and the video goes black as they share a passionate embrace.

'Will you marry me?' he asks, and Melissa, still crying, responds: 'Yes!'

Eventually, they go inside the apartment, and he tells her: 'I'm just glad you opened the door.'

But Melissa still can't get over what happened, saying: 'You just asked me to marry you... I can't believe you're here. Thank god I cleaned my apartment!'

She then calls her family to tell them the exciting news, and Liam turns the camera on them while they share a tender kiss.

In the YouTube caption for his video, Liam writes: 'There are a lot of amazing proposal videos out there. I'm not talented enough [and don't] have the necessary connections to make something great like that.

'The only thing I have working in my favor is the large distance between us and the element of surprise.'

His clip has been viewed more than 6,000 times since he uploaded it two weeks ago.

Liam revealed in the comments section that the couple still has a long visa process ahead of them, but said they're overjoyed about their engagement.
