It's hardly surprising the two close pals beamed as they left the studio, their sighting comes straight after Cheryl’s successful night as both her acts made it through to next week’s live show.

Earlier on, both Max Stone and Monica Michael were axed from the popular ITV series.

Simon Cowell and Rita Ora saw one of their acts go home following Saturday's movie-themed show, but it was Olly Murs who was left red-faced following a huge on-air gaffe.

With Max being sent home first, the sing-off came down to a nail-biting finale which left the judges deadlocked and Monica being sent home after gathering the least amounts of votes from the public.

Following the electrifying movie-themed performances on Saturday night, the X Factor kept up its merciless grind, as hosts Caroline Flack and Olly Murs announced it would be another double elimination.

And as if to emphasise just how important surviving this week was, Simon Cowell revealed the remaining seven contestants going through to next week would all be on the X Factor live tour.

Taking to the stage in nervous anticipation, the nine acts and their mentors, Simon, Rita, Nick Grimshaw and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini all appeared on edge as the tense atmosphere built.

With Caroline and Olly announcing the sad news that Max was the first to be leaving, the aspiring singer was given an affectionate pep talk by his mentor, Simon, before revealing he had no hard-feelings.

Talking to the show's hosts, he graciously bowed out from the competition, saying: 'I feel lucky to have come this far.'

Adding he thought his departure could be down to a number of reasons, explaining: 'I think it might have been the song, maybe I needed a song that showed my voice more, or maybe it was because im ill.'

But the drama didn't end there for Simon, as he faced the prospect of being the first judge to crash out of the competition as he was forced to watch Anton Stephans go up against Monica in the sing-off.

While Monica performed a rousing and fiery rendition of Beyonce's Broken Hearted Girl, Anton chose to showcase his vocal abilities with Simply Red's If  You Don't Know Me By Now.

With the two acts clearly making the choice of who to send home difficult, Nick Grimshaw was the first judge forced to choose between the two, and based his decision purely on the sing-off.

Choosing to save Anton, he said: 'Anton did perform better, so I have to send Monica home.'

Meanwhile, Rita made the decision to save her own act, explaining that she was 'confused' as to why Monica was even needing to fight for her survival.

And obviously sharing Rita's sentiments Cheryl Fernandez-Versini chose to back Monica, saying: 'I have so much history with her, so I’m sticking with Monica.'

But clearly not at all happy with the prospect of losing two acts in one night, Simon opted to go to deadlock by saving Anton.

Going into the deadlock, Olly Murs made tensions rise even further by mistakenly telling Monica that she had been axed as he appeared to get the tally of the judges' votes wrong.

Apologising profusely, the former X Factor runner-up and chart-topper couldn't hide his obvious embarrassment at such a monumental gaffe - something that earned him a huge backlash on social media.

Lurking to one side as Anton and Monica awaited the decision of the public, Olly looked sheepish as he awkwardly crossed his hands and stood still pulling a face.

But following a tense few minutes, where both contestants hugged each other, Monica was revealed to have the least amounts of votes from the public.

Smiling as Olly and Caroline came to speak to her, she bowed out with a hear-warming message, saying: 'Oh my god I’ve loved it here, I've had the most amazing journey.'

Clearly not taking the news quite as well as Monica, an emotional Rita held back tears, as she said: 'I just want people to know that regardless of what's happened tonight Monica’s an amazing talent.'

However Olly wasn't the only one to prompt a social media storm, as Monica was left reeling after the pubic labelled her 'offensive' following the out-going singer appearing to make a gun gesture and shouting: 'Bang, bang, bang.'

Following Monica's exit the remaining seven acts will all now get to perform on the X Factor Live tour, as well as fighting it out all over again in week 10.

The remaining acts are:  Mason Noise, Lauren Murray, Che Chesterman, Reggie and Bollie, Louisa Johnson, 4th Impact and Anton.
