Simon Cowell puts disastrous X Factor results show behind him as he spends quality time with lookalike son Eric during family film night

His weekend was marred by his flagship creation The X Factor taking a hit in the ratings and the credibility stakes.

But Simon Cowell was determined to put his disastrous weekend behind him as he spent some quality time with his son, Eric.

The music mogul, 56, shared a sweet snap of him cosying up to the 21-month-old on the sofa at his London home as they settled into a family film evening.

It will be a welcome relief for the star to be away from the chaos of the X Factor results show on Sunday night.

Presenter Olly Murs sent viewers reeling as he mistakenly declared that contestant Monica Michael would be leaving the show during Sunday night's elimination after he miscounted the four judges' deciding votes.

Rita Ora's contestant did end up getting sent home, but was forced to wait on the stage until the full public vote was revealed – sparking a huge backlash from fans who claim Murs' gaffe proves the show is fixed.

That wasn't the only blow Cowell had to deal with - it was revealed that the BBC's Countryfile pulled in 7.39million viewers on Sunday, compared to X Factor's 7.18million.

Look lovely in a lace top like Caroline

Caroline Flack and Olly Murs might have a little to learn when it comes to presenting, but they certainly don't need to practise their sense of style. Both presenters always look fiercely fashionable on the TV talent show and Caroline Flack especially showed she had the X-Factor on Sunday evening.

The 36-year-old kept things simply chic with a black leather mini skirt and bardot lace top, finishing off her ensemble with sparkly sandals. It was that embroidered top that caught our eye though. The pretty lace off-shoulder piece looked perfectly pretty on the star and we think it would be super versatile too.

The piece looked fab next to the black skirt, but it could easily be teamed with your favorite skinnies or a colorful pencil skirt to do it justice. Fancy snapping it up for yourself? See the piece at Selfridges (right) but be quick as there aren't many left!

Alternatively, we've found an array of lacy numbers below that are a snip of the price of Caroline's so will get you her look for a whole lot less.

It is the latest hit for Simon Cowell's ITV show which has seen viewing figures decline over the last few years and be routinely beaten by BBC rival Strictly Come Dancing.

Even the new series of ITV's I'm A Celebrity, which aired at 9pm on Sunday, did not manage to overtake Strictly, which pulled in nearly 10.5million viewers this weekend.

Questions are now being raised over whether X Factor's contract with ITV will be renewed, when the current £150million three-year deal comes to an end next year.

Despite being the most popular Saturday night show on TV just five years ago, X Factor has tried desperately to revamp its format this year having seen a decline in viewing figures and a rise in competition.

New judges Rita and Nick Grimshaw have been drafted in to give the show a boost, although Radio 1 DJ Grimshaw has been heavily-criticised amid calls from fans wanting ex-judge Louis Walsh to make a return.

Once attracting more 17million viewers, the show now averages around 8million per show although has already dropped to 5.6million for one show this series – the lowest since the launch episode in 2004.

Bookmakers have now dramatically slashed the betting on Murs being sacked as X Factor host – alongside friend and co-host Caroline Flack – after his blunder on last night's live results show.

He was initially 50-1 to be given the chop during the series, but those odds have since been slashed to 10-1 following a rush of bets overnight.

Caroline Flack has also come under fire for her presenting skills and is 20-1 to be sacked, while they are both odds-on at 4-6 not to return for another series.

'It was a bad day in the office for Olly Murs on Sunday which prompted a flurry of bets on the former contestant getting sacked for his mistake,' said Coral's Nicola McGeady.

The singer, who shot to fame on the show itself in 2009, was left red-faced after he mistakenly told Monica that she'd be going straight home, after he miscounted the four judges' deciding votes.

Taking to Twitter straight away after the show finished, he apologised for the gaffe and said: 'I apologise to everyone tonight I made a massive f*** up at the end. It was so tense!! I'm still learning & hope that never happens again [sic]!'

Although plenty of the star's 6.67million followers forgave him, the Essex-born singer faced a massive backlash from the public; with some even declaring his faux-pas proof that the X Factor is supposedly fixed.

One fan declared in outrage that his mistake proved the show 'is fixed', while others were quick to poke fun at the blunder.

A fan, using the Twitter handle @NathanJain98, wrote: 'Tune into ITV2 now where Olly Murs will be revealing who is leaving next week on the #XFactor.'

Meanwhile, others were quick to joke that show boss Cowell would be giving Murs the boot, with one writing: 'Olly Murs just lost his career on live TV.'

The gaffe came just weeks after Olly and his co-presenter Caroline Flack faced criticism for their 'awkward' performances as the show's new hosts.
