The average cost of a home in the UK reached a record high of £286,000 in September, official data reveals. Across the country, house prices increased by 6.1 per cent in the year to September, the Office for National Statistics said. Prices paid by first-time buyers in the last 12 months were 4.3 per cent higher than a year earlier, the figures suggest.
