Joel Edgerton cuts a dapper figure on the red carpet at the 7th Annual Governors Awards... as actor is tipped to win his first Oscar

He may not have been there to accept an Oscar, but Joel Edgerton certainly looked the part as he stepped onto the red carpet at the 7th Annual The Governor Awards on Saturday night.

Looking dapper in an ink blue suit paired with a black bow tie and polka dot pocket square, the 41-year-old was a picture of elegance as he joined his showbusiness peers. 

The event saw around 500 Governor Award nominees attend an exclusive black tie dinner in the ritzy Dolby Ballroom, Los Angeles.

The spectacle-wearing star's newly bleached buzzcut was also on display - a sartorial move prompted by his forthcoming flick Loving, in which he plays a fair-haired man who dares to enter into an interracial relationship in the 1960s. 

Directed by Jeff Nichols, the film will focus on the fruition of the Loving v. Virginia civil rights case which subsequently overturned strict laws prohibiting interracial marriage throughout the state. 

Edgerton, will star alongside Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga - best known for her recurring role as Raina in US series Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Wearing her cropped blonde locks slicked to one side, the 46-year-old sported lashings of dramatic dark eye make-up for the occasion.

Showing off a naturally sun-kissed complexion, she added some nude lip gloss to her red carpet look. 

Her appearance at the awards comes as she prepares to take on a role in the hotly anticipated film Where'd You Go, Bernadette?.

The Oscar-tipped project will see Cate play the role of Bernadette Fox, an agoraphobic architect who goes missing just prior to a family holiday to Antarctica.
