SPOILER ALERT! The Leftovers appears to kill off MAJOR character in shocking episode

The Leftovers appears to have killed off a major character.

Fans of the show will no doubt be left reeling after the events of Sunday's episode.

The shocking episode - which came without warning - has the power to change the entire course of the series.

WARNING: DO NOT READ ON IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED

Major death: The Leftovers appears to have killed off one of its central characters in Sunday's episode

Despite being the central character, Justin Theroux's Kevin Garney was seen apparently dead when the show ended.

Kevin had gone to see an exorcist after seeing visions of Ann Dowd's character Patti - one of Guilty Remnant's leaders - who killed herself in the season one finale.

The plan was for exorcist Virgil to help rid him of the visions by killing him - temporarily - and then restarting his heart.

But things went awry after Virgil committed suicide after performing only the first part of the plan - giving him the deadly drink.

Before shooting himself in the head, Virgil is seen emptying a syringe containing epinephrine, which was what he was supposed to use to revive Kevin.

After foaming at the mouth and writhing around, Kevin went still and certainly appeared to be dead.

Michael - Virgil's grandson - was then shown removing his lifeless body from the home.

Virgil had said earlier in the episode that he would need to receive the epinephrine within five minutes of his heart stopping, which means things aren't looking good for Kevin to still be alive.

Kevin had visited the exorcist after being dumped by his girlfriend Nora (played by Carrie Coon) when he confessed about his visions of Patti.

When he was first told that he would have to be killed and the revived, he ran away, but later returned - desperate to win back Nora, who has fled with their adopted child.

There are just three episodes left in the rest of season two.

While Kevin is yet to be confirmed dead on the show, if he has been killed off, he could still return in some capacity - much like Patti.
