One Direction speak out on their bromance during Good Morning America's 40th anniversary performance... as Zayn Malik slams his ex band's 'generic as f**k' music

Their former bandmate slammed their music this week in a candid new interview.

But One Direction didn't let the criticism get to them as they took to the stage at Good Morning America's 40th anniversary live stream event on Wednesday night.

Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan performed a number of tracks from their new album Made In The AM for an intimate crowd of fans, as they opened up on their creative process.

The US show was celebrating its 40th anniversary with a 40-hour livestream event, with the Brit band jetting into Los Angeles from London to perform.

As well as belting out Drag Me Down, Perfect, Love You Goodbye and History, the foursome spoke to ABC News’ Lara Spencer and singer Nick Lachey about making the album and their planned hiatus next year.

'We make a lot of our music very late at night, never very early, we're lazy people,' Liam explained of the album title, adding that Drag Me Down was inspired by a tricky time in the band.

'I think with everything that happened with us last year it was kind of a statement song to say "look we're going to come out big this year, coming out swinging",' he said.

Louis was also asked about the track Love You Goodbye, with the livestream marking the band's first US performance of the track.

Louis, who wrote the song, cheekily explained: 'It's kind of about you know when you get to the end of a relationship and you want to meet up one last time, you know what I'm saying.'

Harry added that the rest of the band don't like to have too much input into a song once one of the member's has written it, pointing out:

'I think sometimes when someone's written a personal song, you kind of want to leave that alone, you don't want to change it too much.'

With a planned hiatus, thought to be lasting two years, set to start after the group wrap promotion for Made In The AM early next year, Liam admitted it's been a reflective time for the group, especially during their final live dates last month for their epic On The Road Again tour.

Saying goodbye...for now: The band also opened up about their final tour dates last month, with Liam admitting: 'We did get very emotional, obviously a lot of the songs that will be the last time we'll sing them for awhile'

The band's explanation of their creative process comes in the same week that former member Zayn Malik let rip at the group in an explosive interview to accompany a teaser of his debut solo track.

Talking to Fader, the 22-year-old pop star said: 'There was never any room for me to experiment creatively in the band. [It was] generic as f**k. That's not music that I would listen to. Would you listen to One Direction, sat at a party with your girl? I wouldn't.'

Explaining his new artistic direction, which has been teased in a clip for debut single Befour, the Bradford-born star revealed the band he shot to fame in made music that he couldn't connect with.

Defending what his sure to be a controversial view point with his fans and those of the band, he made clear that it's only his honest opinion and not something he means to cause harm with.

'I don't think that's an offensive statement to make. That's just not who I am,' he explained. 'If I was sat at a dinner date with a girl, I would play some cool s***, you know what I mean? I want to make music that I think is cool s***. I don't think that's too much to ask for.'

Following four number one albums and stadium selling tours around the globe, Zayn decided to leave the band in March of this year to pursue a 'normal life'.

However after laying low for several months, the singer announced he had signed a solo record deal with RCA Records in July.

And while much has been made of the ties that still exist between the five original members of One Direction, he revealed that up until this month he had not spoken to any of his former bandmates.

Revealing the extent to which his friendships with Harry, Louis, Liam and Niall have been destroyed, he revealed that the only member he talks to still is Liam.

'I spoke to Liam about two weeks ago... It was the first time I'd spoken to him since I left the band, and I rung him, and he wanted to talk,' Zayn revealed.

'He said that he didn't understand it at the time, but he now fully gets why I had to do what I did. He understands that it's my thing, that I had to do that, and that basically he wants to meet up and sit down and have a good chat in person.'

But while it's uncertain whether he will ever mend things with the rest of the band, following their hiatus he hinted that he and Liam were planning on working on some 'stuff' together.

However, Zayn is no stranger to cutting ties with friends, as only weeks after being spotted in the studio with Naughty Boy - the chart-topper launched an attack on the producer via Twitter.

Following a stint collaborating in the studio with grime act Krept and Konan, Zayn unleashed a furious rant against his producer pal when a video of the session surfaced online in a leak.

Appearing to turn on the 30-year-old producer with a series of tweets, the singer wrote: '@NaughtyBoyMusic you fat joke stop pretending we're friends no one knows you.'

He then added: 'Someone learned how to upload a video... maybe now he should learn how to use logic ha you ain't s*** but a faker'.

While Naughty Boy did not respond to Zayn, he did share some cryptic tweets on Tuesday night saying, 'this "music" business teaches you the tricks but never the truth . you know who you are'.

He then added: 'don't feed the hand that bites you'.

But more tellingly his ties to his former bandmates also came to light on social media only weeks before his bust-up with Naughty Boy, as he publicly lashed out at Louis.

Back in May, Zayn shocked fans after he told his former bandmate to stop making 'b****y' comments about his life following his departure from the band.

The star's tweet was in response to a spat that had broken out between Louis and Naughty Boy.

The furor started when Naughty Boy shared an image of himself and Zayn working in the studio, prompting Louis to tweet about the snap.

He wrote: 'Remember when you were 12 and you used to think those Mac filters for your pictures were cool haha ! Some people still do HA!'

The 30-year-old responded directly, writing: 'and some people can't even sing.. but who's complaining when there's auto tune eh'.

Louis mockingly retaliated: 'Jesus forgot you were such an in demand producer .... How does it feel to be riding on the back of someone else's career?'

Naughty Boy quickly quipped: 'Yeah how does it feel mate? You've been doing that for the last five years... I've got Emeli Sande and Sam smith on my CV.'

The way they were:  Following Louis' outburst Zayn had some choice words for his former band mate, writing: 'remember when you had a life and stopped making b****y comments about mine ?'

But Louis brushed off the comeback, writing: 'good for you , well done !! I think we've done alright in terms of sales and I've happened to write on most. Keep trying !'.

It was at this point that Zayn waded into the spat, and there was no doubting whose side he was on.

Writing directly to Louis, he said: 'remember when you had a life and stopped making b****y comments about mine ?'.

But while Zayn's friendship with Louis appeared to collapse over him making muics with the Watford-born producer, Zayn decided to take a much more quirkier and earthy approach to his solo album.

After signing his deal with RCA, the singer eschewed recording his album purely in a purpose built studio and instead headed to the woods to record part of the album.

Splitting studio time between nature, his home in Hertfordshire and Los Angeles, the singer revealed that he wanted a more 'natural' sound to appear on the album.
