Simon Shaw's glorious 14-year career at Wasps has descended into a bitter contract dispute.

The club are furious at the England lock's apparent U-turn on an agreement to spend a final season at the club.

Wasps claim the 38-year-old signed a contract extension in August before leaving for New Zealand with the World Cup squad but requested it was not announced for personal reasons, to which the club agreed.

Since returning, Shaw has told officials he would like to finish his career overseas instead - he was seen in Toulon at the weekend - but Wasps say he is still contracted to them and are waiting for an official approach.

Dai Young, Wasps' director of rugby, said: 'If a player would rather play somewhere else then there's not a lot you can do about it, but the contract situation needs to be respected. He is in a contract and it works both ways. If he got injured playing for us he'd want to get paid out, wouldn't he?

'It is pretty much in Shawsy's hands wherever he wants to go and play. But they have to speak to us because he's our player.'

Shaw has won four Premiership titles and two Heineken Cups with Wasps.
