'It's not much fun': Star Wars creator George Lucas says he did not want to direct new films because of fan criticism and brands the movies 'soap operas' not sci-fi

The creator of the legendary films is not involved in the new film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will be directed by JJ Abrams.

'You go to make a movie and all you do is get criticized. And it's not much fun,' Lucas told Vanity Fair. 'You can't experiment.'

The Star Wars creator also told CBS This Morning's Charlie Rose there was a difference of opinion about the direction the new movies, which he sees as family soap operas, not science fiction.

'The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, 'We want to make something for the fans,' Lucas said.

'All I wanted to do was tell a story about what happened. You know, it started here and it went here. 'It's all about generations and it's about the issues of fathers and sons and grandfathers.

'It's a family soap opera - it's not just about spaceships.'

'So they decided they didn't want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing. So I decided, 'Fine..I'll go my way and I let them go their way.''

He also said the creators of the new film 'weren't that keen to have me involved anyway.'

'If I get in there I'm just going to cause trouble, because they're not going to do what I wanted to do,' he explained of his decision to step away.

'And I don't have the control to do that anymore and all it would do is muck everything up.

'So I said 'Ok, I will go my way and I'll let them go their way.'

The writer-director compared the situation to a break up, saying no contact is best.

'It really does come down to a simple rule of life, which is, when you break up with somebody the first rule is no phone calls,' he said.

'The third one is you don't show up at their coffee shop... you just say 'nope, gone, history, I'm moving forward.''
