Gillian Anderson is served her own severed leg in controversial PETA advert comparing eating meat to cannibalism

Gillian Anderson is known as an ardent supporter of the PETA animal rights organization.

And the 47-year-old X-Files star just demonstrated her devotion with a new shocking commercial.

The piece was filmed by Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller.

In the chilling commercial, classical music plays as Gillian sits rigidly at the end of long, elegant table.

She's dressed in an enormously plunging dress that exposes her ample decolletage.

The camera pans down the length of the table, which is covered in various plates of food, before revealing a long piece of steaming meat.

Strange words: Only one line is uttered by Gillian as the camera cuts back to her: 'Eating meat - it's a matter of taste'

On the final syllable, the camera then pans down to show that Gillian is apparently missing a leg; indeed the meat on the table was actually her leg.

While the messaging isn't one hundred percent clear, the purpose of the video is no doubt to get viewers to evaluate whether they should consume meat products.

That Gillian participated in the commercial should be no surprise to fans, as she has always been a massive animal advocate.

While filming the X-Files reboot in Vancouver over the summer, the actress would regularly show up to set with her pooch.

Bryan Fuller, who directed the spot and wrote the critically acclaimed series Hannibal talked to Entertainment Weekly as to why he believed in the video's purpose, and why he chose to become a pescatarian.

'Writing Hannibal made me realize that human beings and other animals have more similarities than differences,' said the former NBC showrunner.

'It had a direct impact on how I view meat and what I put in my body. Eating another sentient being is no different than eating another human being, in my mind. The trauma of Hannibal cuts both ways.'

Perhaps somewhat manipulatively, the spot is set to air widely just before the meat-heavy Thanksgiving holiday in America.

Close to her heart: That Gillian participated in the commericial should be no surprise to fans, as she has always been a massive animal advocate
