That's awkward! Niall Horan jokes about weird 1D fan following him into toilet... only to find out it's Jimmy Kimmel's DAD

One Direction knew they would be swamped by adoring fans when they agreed to play live on Thursday on Hollywood Boulevard for Jimmy Kimmel Live.

But the most memorable run in with a fan occurred when Jimmy's dad followed them into the toilet to ask for autographs.

And it led to the late night talk show host admitting that his family have been such big fans of Niall Horan that they even get a cake to celebrate his birthday every year.

Jimmy tried to center the special appearance by the band around a show-long gag where he pretended a potato was the new fifth member of the band.

He watching it soar to over 100,000 likes on Instagram in minutes.

But it was his own father Jim who provided the most entertainment for the band, with them all laughing about the long chat they had backstage that started with him following Niall into the bathroom.

'I just met your dad in the toilet and he asked me to sign,' Niall said with a giant smile after Kimmel asked if any famous people ever asked for their autographs.

Niall insisted Jimmy's dad had followed him in there, and the interviewer first seemed to think he was joking.

'You know I told my dad to stop hanging around the toilet,' Jimmy said, asking: 'Did he do that thing under the stall where he taps your foot?'

'He played footsie, yeah,' Niall joked. 'It was weird.'

Jimmy then admitted: 'Can I tell you something even weirder, on your birthday every year at my parents house, my parents - because my niece loves you - they have a birthday cake for you.'

'That's why he was in the toilet, he showed me the picture,' Niall said with a smile, with Jimmy seeming to realize suddenly that the pop star was not joking about the bizarre exchange.

'Was he really?' he asked, quickly holding his hand over his face as he said: 'Oh my God!'

The rest of the band then pointed out that they also had lengthy backstage chats with his dad, proving how they now knew lots about his family, including blood types, Jimmy's sister's career, and where Jimm lived growing up.

'See, your fans will range from young girls to 70-year-old men,' Jimmy said. 'You're really making an impression.'

He also insisted: 'Every single person on my staff has said, ''These are the nicest guys'' so thank you for being so nice to everybody.'

His dad was not the only one who freaked out at meeting the band - with Melissa McCarthy's 27-year-old cousin Jenna also being shown in the audience after her meeting with them.

Melissa had recalled how when Jenna firs heard the news One Direction would be on the same show as her cousin, meaning she could see them, she reacted with such shock Melissa feared she was 'having medical problems' before hearing her stutter: 'One Direction!'

Jenna then proudly admitted to 'a brief encounter' with the band backstage, saying: 'I'm a big Harry fan, I'm not gonna lie. We had a moment, I like to think.'

Melissa also admitted Harry plays a big part in her five-year-old daughter Georgette's life, but probably not in the expected way.

'My five-year-old spends a lot of time on a fake phone talking to Harry. And she seems kind of bugged by him,' she said. 'It's like she's 56 on the phone with her tax attorney.'

The band played two songs on the show - Perfect and History - with more available to watch online later.

Jimmy said the screaming fans made 'an unruly crowd,' adding: 'Our audience department had to threaten to cancel the show to get them to calm down this afternoon.'

He quipped: 'I tell you, we had no problems when we shut the street down for Van Halen. One Direction, almost a riot out there. The fans are nuts!'

He then joked about the potato becoming the fifth member of the band, saying it would soon be so famous 'it might even be dating Ariana Grande' by the end of the week.

The boys then all 'met' the potato backstage, taking a photo to put on Instagram that soon racked up thousands of likes.

'Move over Kim Kardashian's butt, a new star has been born,' Jimmy joked. 'That's a hot potato if I've ever seen one.'

The potato was then even given its own chair for the boys' interview, sat in-between Harry and Liam at the front, while Louis and Niall were behind them.

Asked what they would do during their hiatus, Harry smiled as he said: 'I think just a lot of kinda chilling out will probably happen.'

But Niall said that, despite their hectic touring schedule, they might still be keen on traveling.

'I think I've driven passed some of the biggest monuments in the world, but never actually stopped beside them,' he said. 'So it would be nice to go back.'

When they revealed they would celebrate Thanksgiving this year as they will be in the US, Liam offered to cook them all dinner, adding: 'That's what I'm getting into during the break - chef.'

And when Jimmy first asked about people asking them for autographs, Harry smiled as he said: 'Um - I can see a Sharpie on your desk.'

Jimmy also had a Lie Witness News skit where they asked fans ridiculous questions - claiming Zane had a head tattoo of 'InZane in the Membrane', Harry was shaving his head, and Liam 'gets a new puppy every week and gives it away because he says it looks old and busted' - to prove fans love them no matter what they hear.

Liam and Niall earlier on Thursday appeared on the Ryan Seacrest show on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles and pranked a Hollywood record store.

They pretended to be American disc jockeys as they called Amoeba Music on Sunset Boulevard to get an update on sales of their new album.
