Last year she sparked outrage with her Bangerz tour when she groped backing dancers and encouraged her audience to smoke marijuana.

But on Thursday night, Miley Cyrus went a whole lot further with her on-stage antics, kicking off her Dead Petz club gigs in Chicago with an almighty bang.

The former Disney star hit the stage at The Riviera Theatre in her most outrageous costumes yet, including one barely-there look which featured a prosthetic penis.

The 22-year-old performed songs from her latest album for a sold-out crowd in Chicago, the first stop in a six-date tour.

At one point the controversial star strutted onto stage in little more than metallic bondage-style underwear and matching thigh-high boots, showing off a pair of fake boobs and a prosthetic penis.

A glittery purple mullet wig was perched on top of her head, as the star belted out her new tracks including Dooo It' and F**kin F**ked Up.

The star continued her run of colourful costumes by covering herself in a huge smiling sun teamed with moon boots, while another look consisted of a skimpy gold leotard decorated with the name of her tour.

Miley's regular tour companion, 6ft7 dancer Amazon Ashley was also clad in some racy looks, joining the singer on stage in a pair of silver leggings, gold dollar print nipple pasties and a huge rainbow wig, as Miley proceeded to nuzzle her chest.

The colourful theme continued with the stage design, with huge balloons floating around the theatre and a drop of confetti heralding the finale.

Miley Cyrus kicked off her Dead Petz tour in Chicago wearing a series of costumes that were more than a little bizarre. From dressing like a stick of butter and a baby to wearing a silver harness-like contraption, we won't be emulating any of these outfit ideas any time soon.

And it's little surprise the star has gone all out with her latest tour, which according to ticket websites has no age restrictions for the venues, after self-releasing the accompanying album in September away from the relative constraints her record label RCA.

She told the New York Times of the 23-track free Soundcloud release at the time that 'this music was not meant to be a rebellion. It was meant to be a gift.'

However, the hitmaker admitted her label didn't get chance to hear the record until it was finished.

'They had never heard the record until it was done,' she confessed, adding that she'll never be the type of artist to fit in with the mainstream.

'I don't think I'll grow that way. It seems like it would be backwards,' she said. '[My team] said they'd never seen someone at my level, especially a woman, have this much freedom. I literally can do whatever I want. It's insane.

'I can just do what I want to do, and make the music I want to make.'
