Horrific details emerge in trial of student who 'raped and murdered his teacher' as the jury is shown the stick he 'used to assault her'

  • Philip Chism, 16, is charged with murdering his ninth-grade math teacher Colleen Ritzer, 24, in October 2013 when he was 14
  • On Friday the court was shown a stick allegedly used to assault Ritzer
  • On Wednesday, jurors watched surveillance video of Chism following Ritzer into a bathroom while putting gloves on
  • Video also shows Chism walking down the hallway with what appears to be blood on his hand - another clip has him carrying her pants
  • Prosecution said Chism killed with 'terrible purpose', arriving with a knife and box cutter and killing, raping and de-robbing Ritzer

The stick Philip Chism allegedly used to assault his math teacher Colleen Ritzer before burying her in a shallow grave was held up in his murder trial on Friday.

Both the mothers of the defendant and the victim bowed their heads as police described to the jury the gruesome assault Ritzer, 24, endured in October 2013 as she was slowly beaten to death on the grounds of Danvers High School in Danvers, Massachusetts.

Chism, who was 14 at the time of the murder, appeared stoic and emotionless throughout the testimony. He has admitted the brutal killing and pleads not guilty on the grounds of insanity.

Prosecutor Kate MacDougall also held up a hand-written note found near the shallow grave that reads 'I hate you all' and Chism's ID, which was found ten feet from the grave.

The jury was then shown a series of clips of surveillance footage taken from the school's security cameras.

The clips show Chism arriving at school carrying multiple bags, which he then put in his locker, according to CBS News.

In another clip, Ritzer leaves her classroom and is soon followed by Chism into the bathroom.

After a few minutes, Chism emerges from the bathroom alone dragging a trash can along the hall and out the back door.

Over the next few minutes, he is seen walking in and out of the school to carry different bags and change his clothes.

He passes through the same corridor at least four times, first wearing a blue top with jeans and sneakers, then a white top with shorts and no shoes, then a red top with shorts and no shoes, then a black top with shorts and sneakers.

The latest footage, shown to Salem Superior Court on the fifth day of trial, comes a day after jurors saw pictures of Ritzer's toe sticking out from a pile of leaves during testimony.

The prosecution say that Chism carefully planned the murder of his teacher, arriving at school that day armed with a knife, box cutter, change of clothes and a ski mask, while the defense are arguing he had spent years struggling with untreated mental problems in the lead-up to the slaying.

The trial started on Monday, and on Wednesday the court was shown chilling surveillance footage of Ritzer's final moments, sporting a smile as she waved at someone in the hallway and walked alone to the bathroom

Moments later, Chism, in a blue hooded sweatshirt, could be seen leaving a classroom to follow her.

With the hood of the sweatshirt over his head and gloves on, the chilling footage then shows the teen, who was 14 at the time, enter the restroom that Ritzer is in.

A few minutes later, a female student then can be seen walking into the bathroom, but she quickly exits.

Prosecutors have explained previously that the girl saw a male's bare buttocks and that she left giggling because she thought she walked in on someone changing their clothes, the Boston Herald reported.

Another clip shows Chism with his hood still raised, walking swiftly down a hallway carrying clothing in his arms, including what appears to be the teacher's black pants that she was seen wearing prior to entering the restroom.

In the footage, the teen's right hand is visibly red, from what could be the teacher's blood.

Jurors in the trial also saw the recycling bin that prosecutors say Chism used to move Ritzer's body to the woods just outside of Danvers High School.

The Herald reported that Chism showed no reaction to the video, staring straight ahead from his seat at the defense table.

Prior to playing the video in court, Judge David Lowy spoke to Chism about whether he wanted to be in the courtroom during the proceedings, WCVB reported.

The teen refused to return to court Tuesday, when he told his lawyer, Denise Regan, he was 'about to explode and ... doesn't want to hurt anyone'.

Witnesses were describing some of the blood-stained evidence in the case at the time.

The judge at first called a recess, then ended proceedings about an hour earlier than scheduled after trying unsuccessfully to speak to Chism himself.

However, Lowy gave Chism the option to watch the trial from another room in the courthouse, but he chose to present instead.

In court Monday, Regan said that her client killed Ritzer but isn't criminally responsible because he is mentally ill.

The teacher's mother, Peggie Ritzer, testified Tuesday in court about the day her daughter was killed.

She said that the math teacher had a consistent routine and came home every day at 3.30pm.

When she didn't that day, the family at first thought she had made other plans or been in an accident.

They began to worry when she wasn't home for dinner, wasn't answering her cellphone and hadn't posted on Facebook. They tried contacting her friends and other teachers.

Her husband went to the high school and found his daughter's car still in the parking lot.

'At that point we started to get very upset,' Peggie Ritzer said.

Jury selection was delayed several weeks while Chism underwent a competency evaluation.
