Newcastle step up striker search as Pardew eyes Leverkusen hitman Derdiyok

Newcastle are considering a move for Bayer Leverkusen striker Eren Derdiyok.

Chief scout Graham Carr went to watch the 6ft 3ins striker play for Switzerland against Liechenstein and saw him open the scoring after just 15 minutes. Carr is also planning to watch him again at the weekend as Leverkusen play Werder Bremen.

Manager Alan Pardew is under pressure to sign a striker and has so far been rebuffed in his efforts to bring in Mevlut Erding from Paris St Germain while the asking price for Tottenham’s Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch is considered too high. Another possible Jermain Defoe is not keen on a move to the North East.

Pardew is still waiting for Liverpool to confirm their move for Jose Enrique and has lined up PSV’S Erik Pieters as a replacement but the striker is the one the Newcastle fans yearn for as they await a replacement for Andy Carroll.

Derdiyok, who is valued at around £8.5million, has caught the eye as Newcastle scouted his international team mate Tranquilo Barnetta.

Meanwhile, Stoke are interested in Newcastle midfielder Jonas Gutierrez.

Newcastle have also allowed striker Phil Airey to join Hibs on a six month loan. The teenager has made one sub appearance in last season’s FA Cup defeat by Stevenage. He was leading scorer for Newcastle’s reserve team last season.
