Abaaoud appeared calm and relaxed as he walked towards the station as chaos reigned around him. He vaulted over the Metro entrance without a ticket.

Just 200 yards away a black Seat hatchback was found abandoned with three Kalashnikov rifles inside.

Moroccan-born Abaaoud, was the world's most wanted man for five days when he went into hiding after the attacks.

He is thought to have been holed up in a squalid flat with no furnishings in the Saint-Denis suburb of northern Paris, described as a hotbed of radicalism, in the shadow of the Stade de France.

On Wednesday armed anti-terror police surrounded the building.

His cousin Hasna Ait Boulahcen, 26, was heard screaming ‘Help me, help me!’ before she was blown up by an unknown suicide bomber and her body flew through the front window in the explosion and her head and spine landed on the street below.

Abaaoud’s body was torn to pieces by bullets and grenades, which meant it took more than 24 hours for forensic tests to confirm he was dead.

The French government today tried to explain how these murderous criminals were able to evade capture and operate so freely in the country.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve was baffled as to how Abaaoud, who spent most of his life in Belgium, was able to so routinely get into France from Syria.

He said: 'Not a single piece of intelligence from a European country that he might have transited through before arriving in France was communicated to us suggesting that he might be in Europe and was heading towards France.'

As he defended the performance of his security agencies, Mr. Cazeneuve pleaded for more intelligence sharing, saying that 'it is urgent for Europe to come together' and to 'wake up'.

Today also saw an early morning counter terrorism raid on a mosque in the western port city of Brest.

Hundreds of heavily armed police officers could be seen storming the place of worship in the district of Pontanezen.

It came as EU chiefs prepared to meet on the week anniversary of the attacks to discuss the alarming security breaches that allowed Abaaoud to strike.
