As teenage heartthrob Danny Zuko, his dark slicked back hair made him the height of cool.

But it seems Grease star John Travolta has failed to keep his once luscious locks in check, as he debuted an unusual blonde streak on his front hairline on Friday.

Appearing on the red carpet in Sydney as he attended QANTAS 95th birthday celebrations, the 61-year-old's once impressive mane looked thin and wiry in a style which was longer at the back than at the top or sides.

The Qantas Ambassador-at-large's locks resembled a 1980's style mullet - a far cry from his usually bushy hair or the carefully sculpted quiff of his iconic Grease character.

Despite the unusual hair, the double Oscar-nominee cut a glamorous figure as he attended the event to celebrate the birth of Australia's national air carrier which was held in Hangar 96 at Sydney Domestic Airport Jetbase.

Arriving at the function flanked by wife Kelly Preston, the American star who is a pilot himself, looked sharp in a fitted black three-piece suit and white shirt which he teamed with a bow-tie.

His 53-year-old wife of 24 years looked fab as she showed off her trim pins in a dark dress featuring a large red rose on the front which she accessorized with a matching clutch and black heeled boots.

The milestone occasion was also attended by a host of celebrities including Australian model Jessica Hart, Courtney Act, Lisa Wilkinson and Richard Wilkins.

The Scientologist is known to have worn wigs and hair pieces to hide his receding hair line.

His use of wigs in everyday life was revealed when a fan took a gym selfie with the actor, who had hair shaved close to his scalp.

The image went viral and shocked fans after John was seen at an event with a full head of bushy hair just two days later.

Covering up the loss of his locks could be reminiscent of the vanity of his Saturday Night Fever character Tony Manero.

Tony was fiercely protective of his image, particularly his impressively coiffured hair, never wanting to let one strand fall out of place.

It’s unlikely the fashion conscious disco fan would ever have been seen sporting John's new style.

John also famously wore a wig to play a woman in 2007 musical Hairspray!

The couple's outing in Australia comes just after John was honoured with the Career Achievement award at the Napa Valley Film Festival in California last week.

The Pulp Fiction star was top billing for the Celebrity Tribute event at the Lincoln Theatre, being honoured alongside 'Legendary Actor' Bruce Dern, and 'Trailblazer' Keegan-Michael Key.

He also stepped out in California on Saturday for the premiere of his new film Life On The Line.

John appears alongside Sharon Stone and Kate Bosworth in the David Hackl-directed drama.

The indie flick focuses on a crew of men who do the high-wire work of fixing the electrical grid as they are hit by a sudden deadly storm.

Meanwhile, John and Kelly's faith, Scientology, has been much in the news of late since former member Leah Remini published her book about breaking away from the church.

But while she has been highly critical of the religion and its poster boy Tom Cruise, the actress was full of praise for its other most famous member.

Speaking to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live last week, she described him as 'lovely'.

'My dealing with John - he's a very sweet man, and he loves the technology of Scientology,' she said.

'I've met him a few times and he's been lovely,' she added.
