An experienced skydiving instructor plummeted 20 metres to his death and the teenage boy who was strapped to his chest is in critical condition after a sudden gale forced their parachute to close.

The tragedy took place during a tandem jump near Goulburn Airport in New South Wales just before 2pm on Saturday, and witnesses have described seeing the pair ‘drop from the sky’ suddenly when their parachute canopy failed, according to Nine News.

The 44-year-old, who has not yet been identified, was a skydiving instructor at the Adrenaline Skydive near Gouldburn airport for eight years and had about 5,000 jumps, died instantly.

It is believed he did not previously know the first timer 14-year-old boy before the jump.
