Commons debate: Award-winning hair stylist Andrew Barton

Plans for MPs to get free luxury hair-care products and makeover advice from television hair stylist Andrew Barton last night sparked a political row.

Former hairdresser turned Tory MP David Morris is hosting the event at the Commons to try to win support for a new law to ban cowboy crimpers.

He has invited MPs and staff  to a ‘free consultation’ later this month with award-winning hairdresser Mr Barton, resident stylist on Channel 4’s show  10 Years Younger.

For a full ‘Andrew Barton Makeover’ at his salon in London’s Covent Garden, Mr Barton charges £510.

There will also be ‘senior stylists’ from upmarket hair salon chain Urban Retreat on hand at the Commons reception, plus free products from L’Oreal and Wella.

An email from Mr Morris’s office says: ‘The items will be specially chosen by our hairdressers so that they are appropriate for each guest. Please RSVP so we don’t run out of products.’

So far, about 100 MPs and their staff are understood to have snapped up the invitation to the event, designed to highlight  Mr Morris’s plan to set minimum statutory standards for all people who becoming hairdressers.

But last night, Labour MP Stephen Pound questioned whether it was appropriate to hand out free hair-care products. ‘I think he’s going to find himself in a close shave with the Commons authorities,’ he said. ‘This is as close to a commercial event as you could get.’

But a spokesman for Mr Morris defended the event, saying Commons security rules meant the stylists could not bring scissors into the building so MPs would not actually get their hair cut at the event.
