In the last decade there have been a myriad of cover-based shooters, but one of the first games to perfect this gameplay mechanic was Gears of War.
Developed by Epic Games and released in 2006 on the Xbox 360, Gears of War smashed its way into a crowded shooter genre to universal critical acclaim and garnered many awards.
Three sequels and nine years later and we have Gears of War Ultimate Edition, The Coalition's re-mastered version of the Xbox 360 classic - and it is well worth the wait.

Gears of War was dark, gritty, intense and as refined as an Xbox 360 game could be.
It was also the first console game to use the Unreal 3 Engine, which meant that graphically the game was nothing short of a technical masterpiece.
Gears of War delivered on every level for some of the most action-packed, Locust-splattered fun ever seen on a console.
It took The Coalition 18 months to complete their re-mastering of Gears, with meticulous care being taken to rebuild all 3000 art assets from scratch and re-mocapping all of Gears' cinematics at a lovely 60 FPS.
It is the first game to come out of their newly formed development studio since acquiring the rights to the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games in 2014.
With a strong campaign chockfull of memorable characters and stand-out moments, Gears' core gameplay truly shines in the Ultimate Edition.
Combat is slick and intense and the 'Insane' difficulty is as brutal as ever, with elite enemies shotgunning players in half at every corner.
Multiplayer also makes a return in Ultimate Edition, with three new game modes - Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill and 2v2 Gnasher Execution – and a total of 19 maps to blast your way across.
Featuring exceptional style, polished core gameplay, gorgeous updated graphics, unforgettable characters and a campaign so action-packed it will blow your socks off, Gears of War Ultimate Edition is everything it says on the tin and more.
If you have never played Gears of War and are tempted by chainsaw-slashing, head-popping fun or simply want a refresher before Gears of War 4, do yourself a favour and pick up a copy.
