I’m not even sure why it’s still a question': Jarryd Hayne shuts down speculation he will return to Australia after being dropped to the practice squad of the 49ers

  • San Francisco 49ers head coach says Jarryd Hayne may return to game
  • However, if he does, it won't be for the next game against Seattle
  • Hayne has denied rumours he will return to play NRL in Australia
  • He also said being dropped from playing put his position in perspective

The San Francisco 49ers have no plans to play Jarryd Hayne against arch rivals the Seattle Seahawks despite star running back Carlos Hyde being ruled out.

But coach Jim Tomsula has provided some hope Hayne could be elevated from the practice squad to the game day team later in the season.

At the same time, Hayne himself has quashed any suggestions he would return to Australia to play NRL again, despite offers from clubs, News.com.au reported.

Despite rumours he would return and it being 'obvious' teams wanted him back, he would stay in the US, he said.

'With everything I’ve done, I’m not even sure why it’s still a question. It’s stupid people would actually believe it.'

His manager, Wayne Beavis, also dismissed rumours of a return to league.

Being cut from the squad earlier this month had put his situation in perspective, he said.

'I’ve only been doing this for five to six months, and it’s still new to me.'

In what could perhaps have been a hint he knew something of a return to play, he said: 'they just want to give me that time to get it down pat. That’s how I’ve taken it, really fine-tuning more than anything.'

Regardless, Hayne will not play in the 49ers next game.

"Well, not for this game," Tomsula told reporters on Friday when asked about Hayne's future.

"My foreseeable future is Sunday."

Carlos Hyde, with fractures in his ankle, will not travel to Seattle for Sunday's (Monday AEDT) must win game for the 49ers.

Shaun Draughn, a former running back for the Cleveland Browns and signed by the 49ers after Hayne was cut, will likely start against the Seahawks.

The 49ers, last in the NFC West division, need a win against the Seahawks, also in the division, to keep their playoff hopes alive.
