Lorde, what a makeover! Singer shows a very different side to herself as she dons plunging scarlet  gown and maintains her new straight hairstyle

She has promised to explore new musical genres in her forthcoming album.

And it seems that Lorde, 19, has also been exploring her style, with the singer stepping out on Thursday at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards in a very different ensemble to what her fans are used to seeing her in.

The singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, donned a scarlet gown with empire line waist, thigh split and extremely plunging neckline as she smiled and greeted fans.

In her hands were the two trophies she scored at the ceremony - one for Single of the Year and another for People's Choice.

She accessorised her look with a pair of black pointy-toe heels and a bejewelled choker.

Lorde, who during her rise to fame rocked a decidedly more rocker aesthetic, toned down her makeup with a peachy-hued blush, gold shimmery eye-shadow and nude lipstick.

While many fans have applauded Lorde's new 'do, others have mourned the loss of the Royals singer's famously untamed curls.

Taking to Instagram to calm down her curl-loving fans last week, Lorde wrote: 'all u young panic stations the hair is still naturally curly, had a shoot like 6 days ago and just haven't washed it since they blew it out. forever ur curlz mt.'
