Shay Given is about to defy the medics again and be fit for the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2012 opening qualifier against Slovakia on Friday.

The Irish No 1, nicknamed Lazarus for his recovery powers, joined the squad on Tuesday night confident his back will hold up for Friday's qualifier in Dublin and the match with Russia in Moscow next Tuesday.

He missed the first two days of training to have treatment but his fitness remains a concern, especially with Tuesday's game being played on an artificial pitch.

Meanwhile, Ireland's bid to have their Euro 2012 qualifier against Andorra played in Barcelona to accommodate their fans has been rejected by UEFA. The game on October 7 must take place at the Estadi Comunal in Andorra.
