British No 1 Andy Murray has caused a stir after stopping to trim his fringe during the ATP World Tour Finals group clash against Spain's Rafael Nadal on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old, who lost in straight sets at the O2 Arena, took out a small pair of scissors and cut away, to get a clearer line of vision.

He later explained: 'I had some hair in my eye, and I just wanted to get rid of it. That literally took two seconds. That was it.'

Even that didn't work though, with the Scotsman looking out of sorts throughout the match while Nadal took a giant step towards reaching the semi-finals of the competition.

A victory for Murray would have guaranteed him his status as world No 2 for the end of the year.

Murray told the BBC prior to facing Nadal: 'It would be obviously nice to finish number two because I haven't done it before, but it's not a goal that I'd set for myself at the beginning of this year or throughout the whole year really.'

Murray must now win his last group match to stand any chance of reaching the ATP World Tour's last four.

Should Murray make the semi-finals, he will be playing in London until at least Saturday with Britain's Davis Cup final against Belgium beginning on the following Friday.

'I've only played two tournaments in the last seven or eight weeks really,' he added.

'I feel good just now. Hopefully I can perform well here and in Belgium. I believe that I've given myself the best chance to do that.'
