France's Ligue 1 resumed amid heightened security on Friday night as Nice took on Lyon, a week on from the terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of 130 people.

Action in the French top flight made its return at the Allianz Riviera - one of the stadiums set to host games at next summer's European Championship - as fans held candles before kick-off in memory of those who died.

Following the international break there is a full programme of fixtures this weekend - although there will be no away fans present at any games in a bid to help police cope with the greater need for resources across France.

In the Barclays Premier League, the French national anthem - La Marseillaise - will be played before all fixtures in an gesture of 'solidarity and remembrance' with France.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: 'Given how close we are, as well as the long-standing relationship that exists between the Premier League and France, playing La Marseillaise as an act of solidarity and remembrance is the right thing to do.'

Chelsea's players will wear black armbands featuring the French Tricolore when they taken on Norwich City, and Newcastle United will also don armbands for their meeting with Leicester City.

Fans have been warned to arrive at stadiums well before kick-off to help deal with the extra time that the heightened searches will take up.

Security has also been beefed up Spain before Saturday's El Clasico meeting between Real Madrid and Barcelona in the capital.

The numbers of police present will double to at least 1,000 from the numbers typically deployed for the nation's biggest fixture, while 1,400 private security guards will also be present.

Nice ran out 3-0 victors over Lyon while Dortmund were beaten 3-1 at Hamburg. Middlesbrough saw off QPR with a stoppage time penalty to claim a 1-0 win.
