Manchester United without Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and three others for Watford trip, reveals Louis van Gaal

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is ill and a major doubt for Saturday's game at Watford in the Barclays Premier League.

'He is at home and I don't think he can play,' said United manager Louis van Gaal.

United are battling with a minor attacking injury crisis ahead of their game at Vicarage Road with Anthony Martial, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini also set to miss out.

VAN GAAL'S INJURY LIST

Luke Shaw, broken leg, six months

Wayne Rooney, illness, one match

Anthony Martial, foot, one match

Michael Carrick, ankle,1-2 weeks

Marouane Fellaini, calf, two weeks

Antonio Valencia, foot, five months

'Martial probably could have played but it's better for him if he doesn't,' Van Gaal added. '(James) Wilson can play but he cannot play a whole match because he doesn't have the rhythm of the game.

'Carrick's injury is not heavy. He shall play much sooner than people wrote.'

Van Gaal meanwhile has backed the plan to play the French national anthem ahead of tomorrow's games in the Premier League in the wake of last weekends terror attacks.

'It's nice for the French people and the relatives of the victims,' he said.

Rooney's absence means Van Gaal is desperately short of attacking options for the game at Vicarage Road on Saturday lunchtime.

POSSIBLE UNITED XI AT WATFORD

De Gea; Jones, Smalling, Blind, Rojo; Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin; Mata, Herrera, Lingard; Wilson.

Wilson, United's only other striker, is lacking fitness while Fellaini, who has played up front for Van Gaal, is unavailable due to a calf problem.

Antonio Valencia (foot) and Luke Shaw (leg) are also out through injury.

Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger were all involved in France's victory over Germany that was targeted by terrorists.

Three suicide bombers blew themselves up outside the Stade de France during the friendly, but the match went on.

Further attacks occurred in the French capital on Friday night and 129 people were killed.

Van Gaal has spoken to the three players who were involved in the friendly and will check upon them again before deciding whether to field them at Watford.

'What they have told me is private I think, but we have communicated about it (the attacks),' Van Gaal said.

'I think it is, for every human being in this world, a big blow, so I don't think I have to mention what our discussions were.

'Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin can play, if we don't take into account this event that has happened.'
