Jose Mourinho: I don't deserve to splash the cash in January because of Chelsea's start

Jose Mourinho claims he has lost the right to make changes to his playing squad in the January transfer window because of Chelsea's disastrous start to the season.

The champions are 16th in the Barclays Premier League table and Mourinho insists he will continue to work with his current squad instead of demanding changes at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho, preparing for Saturday's clash with Norwich City, said: 'I'm not saying I won't sign anyone — I'm saying I won't ask the club to do that. I don't have the right to do it, in my opinion. I'd be more than happy with the squad I have now.

'I will not ask for any changes. I will not ask the board in January. I'm happy with the players and I trust the players.

'I don't need to clean the dressing room, as I heard was written somewhere. And I don't need to ask the club to spend money in January. We put ourselves in a great situation together by being champions. We put ourselves together in this situation in the Premier League. We have to be together, again, to put it right.

'Our performance during the season in the Premier League is not good enough. If I ask for players, or if the clubs give me a handful of players, it's like taking a bit of the responsibility out of us and saying we need extra to reach our objectives.

'I want the responsibility in my hands and the players to have the responsibility in their hands. I want the players to feel I trust them and don't need other players to reach the objectives. So, I think, we should go together: me and the players.'

Chelsea are monitoring a number of different targets, including a large number of English players, but the decision on the timing of potential bids has not been taken.

Although Mourinho insists he will not make any recommendations for signings, the Chelsea manager is willing to accept reinforcements if the decision is taken by the football club board.

He added: 'Of course, yes (to a superstar signing). But not because I'm not happy or don't trust my players, or that I think only a superstar will help us reach our objectives.

'We believe in ourselves, we trust ourselves. I'd be more than happy to go with this group to the end. I always look to players. But, in the last week, if every name connected to us was true we would have to build a new training centre because there are already 126.'

Mourinho is still smarting from the stadium ban that forced him to miss their defeat at Stoke City in their last Premier League game.

He will be back on the bench at Stamford Bridge for the clash with Alex Neil's team, but he remains mystified about the decision to ban him from the Britannia.

Mourinho added: 'It's something I think a manager doesn't deserve unless something really aggressive, physical takes place.

'But I think it's something I would never expect to live. To not be able to go to a football stadium.

'From television, it's different from being in the stadium. I don't know if my vision is the correct one, but I saw Asmir Begovic only twice on the screen. I saw him twice — and one was a goal.

'And I saw Chelsea with possession, with control, playing in the opponents' half, having not 10 or 15, but four or five good chances.'

Chelsea confirmed they are taking advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office ahead of their Champions League tie against Maccabi Tel Aviv on Tuesday following two terorrist attacks in Israel on Thursday.
