Johnny Knoxville set to bring long-sought adaptation of Hawaiian Dick comic books to NBC as one-hour comedy action series

Johnny Knoxville has teamed up with NBC for a television adaptation of the Hawaiian Dick comics.

The 44-year-old Jackass star will co-produce the one-hour comedy action series based on the tropical supernatural graphic novels, according to an article on Tuesday by The Hollywood Reporter.

Knoxville was previously attached to star in a feature film adaptation of Hawaiian Dick when it was optioned in 2004 to New Line Cinema.

The option was renewed in 2006 but a feature film was not produced.

Knoxville is not attached to the NBC project as an actor, according to Deadline.

The Image Comics graphic novels created by writer B. Clay Moore and artist Steven Griffin center on former mainland detective Byrd who is exiled to Hawaii in the early 1950s.

Byrd and his wartime friend Mo Kalama become immersed in the dark side of paradise as they encounter Hawaiian legends such as Night marchers.

There have been three installments of the series starting with Hawaiian Dick: Byrd of Paradise in 2002.

It was followed in late 2003 by the long-running Hawaiian Dick: The Last Resort.

A third series subtitled Screaming Black Thunder was released in 2007.

A fourth series Aloha, Hawaiian Dick is due out in early 2016.

Knoxville also recently produced the Evel Knievel documentary Being Evel that premiered earlier this year at Sundance.
