Keep your eyes on the road! Race ace Lewis Hamilton is caught with one hand on the steering wheel and another clutching a mobile phone

  • It was just ten days after he crashed his £1.5million Zonda into parked cars

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has been pictured driving with one hand one the steering wheel while looking at his mobile phone in the other hand.

The racing driver did not seem to be paying any attention to the road as he drove his Mercedes SUV in Monaco, just weeks after becoming champion.

The photograph was taken a week after a collision, also in Monaco, when he crashed his £1.5million Zonda into stationary vehicles.

The triple world champion’s accident happened in Monaco just before he was due to fly to Sao Paulo for this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

After the accident, the champion excused himself by saying: ‘It was a result of heavy partying. I am a bit run down.’

Hamilton’s arrival in Sao Paulo was delayed and he missed a sponsor event on Wednesday, blaming a fever.

He later revealed on the social website Instagram that he had had an embarrassing road accident in his purple Zonda, which has a top speed of 217mph, a 760 horsepower engine and does 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds.

The £1.5million vehicle was commissioned exclusively for Hamilton by the Italian manufacturer, hence the model number being 760LH.

The accident happened at 3.30am on Tuesday - rather than Monday night as he first claimed on Instagram.

Police were called. Hamilton’s Zonda struck three stationary vehicles (rather than one, with ‘very light contact’, as he also claimed.

A spokesman for Monaco’s Palais de Justice told Sportsmail: ‘Mr Hamilton’s foot slipped on the brake and clutch pedals and his vehicle struck three parked cars. He was tested for alcohol but the result was negative.’

Hamilton declined to address the accident in most of his media appointments in the paddock on Thursday, but speaking to a small group of Fleet Street reporters, he opened up about his party lifestyle and how he feels it has taken a toll on his senses.

‘It was a result of heavy partying and not much rest for a week and a half,’ he said of the crash. ‘I am a bit run down. I have been non-stop and trying to fit training in at the same time and not getting a lot of sleep.

‘The last two days I have slept pretty much all day. I couldn’t believe how much I slept. I slept on the flight here. I usually sleep four or five hours but when you are training you need more than that.’

Hamilton, who used to be virtually teetotal, says he now parties hard, both in Monaco, where he lives, and with friends in Los Angeles and Miami.

He promised to drink lustily for weeks after winning the title in Austin last month, with his mother Carmen’s party in London last weekend, a highlight in his social calendar.

The newest photo that emerged today was taken just nine days after the collision with parked cars.
