Russian players faced World Cup backlash after 2018 vote, claims Bilyaletdinov

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov claims he and his Russia team-mates faced a backlash in England after his country won the right to host the 2018 World Cup.

The former Everton midfielder says the sea change was part of the reason he joined Spartak Moscow this winter.

Bilyaletdinov said: ‘The atmosphere took a turn for the worse after we beat them to the rights to host the World Cup. The referees didn’t have much sympathy for us.’
