Dominic West makes a rare red carpet appearance with his wife as Affair co-star Ruth Wilson stuns in fairytale gown at Evening Standard Theatre Awards

Dominic West is rarely pictured out and about with his wife Catherine Fitzgerald.

But on Sunday night all that changed when dapper Dominic, 45, made a rare red carpet appearance with his other half at The Evening Standard Theatre Awards, in partnership with The Ivy.

The couple shared the red carpet with Dominic's The Affair co-star Ruth Wilson, 33, who looked radiant in her fantastical gown at the Old Vic Theatre in London.

Dominic looked smart in a blue velvet dinner jacket and a black bow tie, while Catherine looked elegant in head-to-toe black, and added a splash of colour with her floral scarf.

Meanwhile, Ruth looked stunning in her fairytale floor-length gown, with her reddish blonde hair styled in loose waves.

Ruth may be earning rave reviews for her role in raunchy US mini-series The Affair, but the actress has joked that the graphic bedroom scenes have turned her off sex for life.

The show, co-starring fellow Brit Dominic, is set to air in Britain later this year.

Ruth has already been hailed as a 'breakout star' by Hollywood bible Daily Variety for her part as a married waitress who steals West's character away from his wife and four children.

But Ruth has admitted she is a 'prude' when it comes to filming explicit material, saying: 'I'm a British prude and dread any sex scene that has to be performed. For an actor they are miserable and vaguely embarrassing. It's put me off sex for life.'

The highly-acclaimed actors joined Nicole Kidman and James McAvoy, who were among the winners at this year's bash.

A host of West End stars braved London's near-freezing temperatures tonight and came out to celebrate the best of British acting at the Old Vic, where Imelda Staunton also took home one of the most prestigious awards.

Gemma Arterton and Vanessa Redgrave were among the other winners at the ceremony, which was co-hosted by Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen.

Kidman won the award for Best Actress for her performance as scientist Rosalind Franklin in Photograph 51. Speaking before the ceremony, she said: 'I kind of jumped into it without realising how much I was taking on so halfway through the rehearsals I got real stage fright. To be standing here today is extraordinary and I am so so glad that I did it.

'I did it for my father, who was a scientist - he has been orbiting around this whole thing - and also for Rosalind, who was not recognised in her lifetime. That has been very very important to me.

'Photograph 51 was written by a female playwright about a female scientist so to be able to champion that was an honour and a privilege.'

McAvoy was named Best Actor for his role in The Ruling Class, while Staunton received a standing ovation after she won Best Musical Performance for Gypsy and performed the song Everything's Coming Up Roses from the musical. There was also a performance from Pixie Lott, who sung Moon River from the forthcoming production of Breakfast At Tiffany's.
