News of Jawad Bendaoud's conviction for stabbing a teenage victim to death came as he was remanded in custody for a fourth night in a row. He has admitted lending his rundown apartment in the northern suburb of St-Denis to the ringleader of the massacres that left 130 people dead on November 13.

Central Brussels, usually bustling on a Sunday evening, was virtually deserted, with police and troops on patrol. Mother-of-two Faye Richards, from Bristol, discovered the ginger tom huddled on her front step, so covered in concrete (right) that it couldn't even open its eyes. Faye (inset) rushed it to the vet, where it was shaved (left) and had the concrete combed out of its coat. The cat, which has no microchip to identify him, has now been completely shaved and is said to be well on the road to recovery. It is currently staying with the vet who cared for it.

Second-year George Lawlor, 19, fears for his future at Warwick University after being ostracised and bullied for challenging a student union drive to hold rape awareness sessions. Writing in a blog, he argued that the overwhelming majority of people 'don't have to be taught to not be a rapist' - and that men inclined to commit the crime would be unlikely to attend such a workshop. He added that he found his invitation to one of the sessions 'incredibly hurtful'. But in the latest example of politically correct intolerance in universities, the student faced a fierce backlash from radical feminists. He was attacked on Twitter and Facebook by student activists branding him a 'rapist' and 'misogynist'. Mr Lawlor, who studies politics and sociology, fears the furore will affect his academic work - and his future career.

The suspected gas blast incident happened in the village of Wooburn Green, near Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire. The semi-detached property has reportedly been completely destroyed. Residents in Old Watery Lane were forced to evacuate their homes, as the road shut. A man had to be rescued by firefighters and a woman was trapped in the property, but was freed before the emergency services arrived.

Huge flames started shooting out of Suzaane Dale's toaster (top right) when she turned it on its side to cook cheese on toast in her home in Manchester. It took firefighters 20 minutes to put out the blaze. Minutes afterwards (bottom right) she snapped a photograph of the damage and shared it on Facebook with the message 'Don't try this at home', which has had more than 2,000 shares. Ms Dale (left) said: 'Luckily I live in a house and have a garden, but if it was anyone living in a flat or somebody who was less agile who couldn't get out as quick, it could be dangerous. They were real flames. I don't want anybody to be doing that in a flat or anyone who could not get out quick.'

Harmonie-Rose Allen, of Bath, Somerset, was struck down by deadly meningitis B when she was only ten months old - just ten days after she took her first steps. Doctors told her parents Freya Hall and Ross Allen that their daughter had a 10 per cent chance of survival, and that the little girl's case was one of the worst they had ever seen. But Harmonie survived - although she lost her arms, legs and the tip of the nose - and last month she tried out a new high-tech walking frame, which physiotherapists hoped would help her to walk. Now, the two-year-old girl has been fitted with her first set of prosthetic legs with feet, which she has been testing out with a new pair of purple buckle-up shoes.

A young boy (pictured) with an unfortunately timed case of the hiccups has powered through a performance of the national anthem at a Baseball game. Ethan Hall, seven, from Hallmark Music Studio in South Australia, was given the privilege of singing the national anthem before the Australian Baseball League match between the Brisbane Bandits and Adelaide Bite at Cooper Stadium on Friday night. However, footage of the memorable performance showed players from both baseball teams struggled to contain their giggles as Ethan stumbled through the song with an adorable bout of the hiccups.
