Liverpool are at home on the road but Jurgen Klopp must reproduce away form at Anfield... and will Manchester United fans care if they win title playing boring football?

  • Jurgen Klopp must instill confidence into his Liverpool players at Anfield
  • Manchester United are proving very effective if not pleasing on the eye
  • Romelu Lukaku has all the right tools to become one of the league's best
  • It's time more clubs started to look at players in the lower leagues
  • Arsenal don’t have the strength in depth in defensive midfield department

What a great away performance again from Liverpool. They were magnificent at Chelsea before the international break and even better at Manchester City on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp's style is suited to playing away but I don't understand why it can't be transferred to Anfield.

Playing at home should be a pleasure, not a chore. But as our table shows, since Klopp took over his team have been far better on their travels.

I was impressed with how they took the game to City and the Liverpool bench, with Christian Benteke, Daniel Sturridge, and Jordon Ibe, was strong. Once Klopp cracks the formula at Anfield, his side can really shift into another gear.

BORING, BORING MAN UNITED?

I have to say I agree with a lot of the criticism being levelled regarding the style of Louis van Gaal's Manchester United side. But if they win the league, will the fans really care?

Yes, they lack the attacking swagger of the past but they are in a great position in the title race. Their neighbours City have already lost games 4-1 home and away this season, so United fans should be careful what they wish for. Nobody expected Fergie's side to win it in 2013, but they did. This is not a great United side but they are more than capable.

LUKAKU'S GOT IT ALL

Striker Romelu Lukaku has joined an illustrious list

Striker Romelu Lukaku has joined an illustrious list

In the past I've been critical of Romelu Lukaku. The only reason for that is frustration, because he can be so good. On his day, Lukaku is a monster. He's bigger, stronger and quicker than almost every centre back he plays against.

He's devastating in the air and has great subtlety to his game — he's not just a battering ram. Sometimes I find myself thinking: 'My god, you've got everything.' The trouble is, I'd like to see it more often.

On Saturday he was at his best and his link-up play with Ross Barkley was as good as you'll see. The fact he's now reached 50 Premier League goals before he's 23 shows you what a player he is — only some of the best this league has ever seen have managed that. Now I'd love to see him push on and do more. If he does, there's no limit to what he can achieve.

VARDY'S EXAMPLE

Jamie Vardy's is such a great story but it got me thinking. Surely it's time more clubs started to look at players in the lower leagues. They'd certainly save money on air fares scouting around Europe. The talent is out there.

Vardy has gone from non-League to England, Bournemouth have players who have made the step up and Dele Alli has been catapulted ahead of his rivals because of his lower-league experience. It makes players street-ready and hungry.

The England team last week had four starters who all began life in the lower divisions — Joe Hart, Nathaniel Clyne, John Stones and Alli. It just proves you don't always have to go for an exotic name. There are gems out there if clubs take a chance.

CREDIT CLAUDIO

Many people, myself included, questioned the appointment of Claudio Ranieri. The Tinkerman was a bit of a laughing stock. Who's laughing now?

In fairness everything was in place for Ranieri after their incredible escape last season. I didn't expect them to be relegation candidates but I didn't think they'd be top of the league either!

It's not time to get carried away but it's been an incredible start and it's felt like redemption for Ranieri.

STOKE CITY'S SUPER SIX

With all the drama elsewhere, Stoke's win at Southampton almost went unnoticed. They have good little players like Bojan, Xherdan Shaqiri and Marko Arnautovic. It's not always been easy for Mark Hughes but that's two big results back to back — Chelsea at home and Southampton away. They would probably have taken two points from those games. Now they have six.

SPURS BUILD FROM THE BACK

What a performance from Tottenham. They were like a pack of hyenas on Sunday — they didn't give West Ham room to breathe.

SUPER STAT

12 - Shots on target for Tottenham against West Ham - no team have registered more this season.

The midfield was excellent — they condense the pitch so it's tight for the opposition but big for them — and they can press hard because the back four is so strong.

Toby Alderweireld is a huge part of that. He's rock solid and like a manager on the pitch. It was a similar display to Liverpool and I was lucky enough to cover both. When teams press and attack that well, it's almost impossible to live with.

FRANCIS FEAR

Every team seems to have one player they can’t do without. At Arsenal it’s Francis Coquelin.

As soon as he went off on Saturday, you could tell things would go wrong. It’s the moment Arsenal fans have been afraid of because they don’t have a player who can do the job he does — and now he’s facing months on the sidelines.

Every year Arsenal seem to suffer with injuries but they just don’t have the strength in depth in that department.

Defeat by West Brom was a disastrous result and now, rather than looking ahead, they are looking over their shoulder.

GET WELL SOON, GRAEME

And a quick one for my old friend Graeme Souness, the man who gave me my Liverpool debut, which was a moment I’ll never forget. We missed you not moaning at everybody in the Sky studio this week and look forward to having you back growling at us all again. Get well soon, mate.
