Blues lifted by injury boost as Di Matteo declares fully fit squad for Benfica clash

Chelsea were given a huge boost ahead of Wednesday night’s showdown against Benfica as Roberto Di Matteo revealed he has a fully fit squad.

There had been doubts over the fitness of six first-team players - Branislav Ivanovic, Daniel Sturridge, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Petr Cech and Didier Drogba - but all took part in training on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge.

David Luiz, his right knee heavily strapped, caused a slight scare when he came off worst in a heavy challenge on Fernando Torres, but was able to complete the session.

Di Matteo said: ‘All the players are available, so that will help us. It’s very demanding, but we’re in a good place.

‘Fortunately we have a fully fit squad. This is half-time and we’re leading 1-0, but a 1-0 lead is basically nothing. We need to go and qualify.’

Midfielder Ramires also insisted Andre Villas-Boas’ departure has given Chelsea more confidence and a belief they are a ‘great team’.

The 25-year-old said: ‘We went through a tough period, obviously, but Roberto has instilled great confidence in us, and we began to realise we are a great team.’
