Grin when the twain meets: Defence minister and army chief appear to be best friends


Ooty witnessed the first flush of a summer bonhomie after a winter of discord.

Having buried the hatchet over bitter controversies, defence minister A.K. Antony and army chief General V.K. Singh betrayed a rare camaraderie at a joint public appearance in the Tamil Nadu hill station on Tuesday.

Contrary to general trepidation, there was no firework when the two arrived in Ooty for the memorial service of the country's first and only field marshal Sam Manekshaw.

After placing wreaths, Gen. Singh and Antony were seen animatedly talking for nearly 10 minutes. The former refused to oblige a waiting media; the defence minister, too, was not prepared to field questions on either politics or the army.
