Batman Begins his journey! Mirthful Christian Bale is full of cheer as he gets ready to jet out of Los Angeles

He is often perceived as one of the grumpiest men in Hollywood.

But jolly Christian Bale was a man transformed as he gleefully jetted out of Los Angeles on Saturday.

Perhaps the close proximity of the festive season was enough to put the Batman Begins actor in a good mood as he prepared to fly out of the bustling LAX Airport.

It would certainly explain the impressively bushy Santa-esque beard the 41-year-old wore as he sauntered through the departure lounge.

Of course, given the Welsh beefcake is a father of two young children, it could be he is simply preparing to put his formidable talents to good use by dressing up as Father Christmas on December 25.

He is also filming in the process Terry George movie The Promise, which is set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, so it is perhaps more likely it is simply a period piece of facial fuzz.

The roguishly handsome multimillionaire was once again happy to dabble in the stylistically challenging world of hobo chic, attempting to pull off a pair of Charlie Chaplin-esque baggy trousers, a grey shirt and running shoes.

Last week the big rascal proved he scrubs up exceedingly well when he attended the premiere of The Big Short in wonderful bespoke suit, which no doubt cost a pretty penny.

The film tells the true-to-life story of a few men that were able to make millions off the housing and credit bubble.

Christian, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt and Steve Carrell all portray major players in the creation of the credit default swap market. which was used to their financial advantage while the rest of the country suffered.

The film is based on the 2010 best-selling book by Michael Lewis, known for writing Moneyball and The Blindside, about the housing and credit bubble titled The Big Short: Inside The Doomsday Machine.

Earlier this year his solo starring vehicle Knight Of Cups was pushed back to a limited release in 2016 despite already being in the can, perhaps no coincidence after it was lashed by critics.

The Terrence Malick movie follows Christian's Hollywood screenwriter character as he prances around a Los Angeles beach in an Armani suit, attends star-studded parties and get chased around hotel rooms by scantily clad models while despairing at the futility of it all.

The BBC's Nicholas Barber described it as a 'ludicrous self-parody - somewhere between a Calvin Klein aftershave advertisement and a coffee-table book about the modernist mansions of the rich and famous.'

Thankfully Christian does not have any such existential worries of his own however, as he is married to a beautiful woman, has sired two wonderful children and has an estimated net worth of $80 million.

Existential crisis: Christian's character despairs at the futility of it all as he prances around a beach in an Armani suit and gets chased around by scantily clad models in Knight Of Cups
