Gwen Stefani captivates AMAs with emotional rendition of breakup ballad Used To Love You... as new beau Blake Shelton tweets his support

It was one of the most anticipated performances of Sunday night's American Music Awards.

And Gwen Stefani captivated the crowd at the Microsoft Theater when she belted out her ballad Used To Love You - which is reportedly about her split with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale.

Unsurprisingly, the 46-year-old singer was brimming with emotion as she sang the hit wearing a sheer black gown.

Standing alone on the stage, the star needed no backing singers or gimmicks as she belted out the very personal lyrics.

Playing on the screen behind the No Doubt hit maker was the striking pared-down video which accompanies her song.

Gwen debuted the video last month and it consists of one long close-up shot of the star as she mouths the words appearing wrought with emotion.

The TV personality wore her platinum blonde locks swept back in a wet-look style and sported her trademark red lipstick.

Earlier in the evening Gwen made an eye-popping arrival on the red carpet.

She wore a kooky sheer fishtail dress that put her underwear on show and also featured bat-wing sleeves and a thick black choker.

She made a solo appearance on the red carpet despite her new romance with her co-star on The Voice, Blake Shelton.

But the country star showed his support for his sweetheart as he tweeted a fan who called Gwen's performance 'the best of the show'

The 38-year-old crooner responded simply 'Agreed...'

The emotional breakup song is believed to be about her split from fellow rocker Gavin Rossdale, who she shares three children with.

Gwen's appearance follows reports her ex had cheated on her with the family's longtime nanny.

While the singer has never outright confirmed whether the single is directly about her split, rumors heated up after a video was released of the blonde crying while singing the song in a dark room.

And the pop star appeared to confirm that her emotional new single really is about her ex when she recently appeared on The Today show.

Gwen could not hide her surprise when asked if her new song Used To Love You was about Gavin and their recent split. 'Oh my god!' Gwen said visibly uncomfortable, 'Put me on the spot! I'm like, "Whoa" Whoa!"'

But she then admitted that the song was written recently and came from a deep personal place.

'I wrote that song a couple weeks ago,' she said appearing to confirm it was about her ex.

And regarding the emotional video that just came out, she explained: 'I sat in front of a camera in a dressing room randomly - not to make a video just to do some background video.'

'It's all very real,' she added.

Soon after another layer of subtext was added after reports emerged of Gavin, 50, being allegedly unfaithful to his wife of 13 years.

The revelations came after Gwen confirmed her romance with fellow The Voice host Blake Shelton, 39.

It has been a rough time for the blonde singer after she called it a day with the Bush frontman after he allegedly cheated on her with their nanny Mindy Mann.

Last week, it was reported that Rossdale had been involved in a three-year relationship with the blonde Australian.

According to Us Weekly, Gwen was forced to confront the British star when she discovered explicit pictures and texts on their children's iPad, which was linked to his phone.

‘The iPad was linked to Gavin’s phone,’ a family source told the publication.

‘One of the other nannies discovered the exchange and told Gwen.’

The admission reportedly ‘completely devastated her,’ an insider revealed. ‘She was mortified, livid, and embarrassed.’
