Shearer: you can't help but be impressed by Newcastle's new No 9 hero

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer claims the club's new goalscoring sensation Papiss Cisse has 'blown everyone away'.

The Senegal striker took his tally since joining the club to 13 in just 12 games with a stunning double in last night's 2-0 Barclays Premier League win at Chelsea.

His second strike was a strong goal-of-the-season contender. Cisse's venomous half-volley from an outrageous angle swerved over the helpless Petr Cech.

A big fan of the Toons' new striker, Shearer said: 'I don't think you can be anything but very impressed.

'Sometimes it takes time for a foreigner to settle, not only in the Premier League but up north.

'But the guy has just gone in and blown everyone away with his performances and goals.

'As a striker you are judged on goals, but even if you take his goals away his movement and hold-up play have been excellent.

'His first one was good last night but his second was just out of this world."

Cisse is fast becoming the latest in a long line of heroic Newcastle No 9s, Shearer himself being one of them.

Shearer feels having such a prolific centre forward has enabled the Magpies to develop their tactical approach and sustain their challenge for a Champions League qualification spot.

Shearer, the club's record goalscorer with 206, said: 'When you have got a guy in your team like that who can score spectacular goals it gives you a platform.

'You can set yourselves up as tough to beat because you can rely on one of the guys to stick one in at the other end.

'Particularly away from home - at home you have got the crowd pushing you forward, 52,000 screaming at you - you can keep it more defensive.

'They have done that because guys like that can grab you a goal.'
